Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

Post by Cassian Fri Apr 15, 2022 4:37 am

This wasn't his wisest decision, but Cassian du Villanell made it a point to keep those few and far between anyway. What kind of rebellious prodigal son would he be if he didn't ruffle some feathers with impulsive moves as much as possible? Let his family sweat his arrival, trying in vain to guess what sort of shenanigans he'd have in tow. The mere thought of their discomfort curled deviousness into his mouth as he waited at the city gate for the carriage he'd sent for Beaux.

Inviting Beaux was a gamble, but Cassian was always a betting man. Since their first date, and other than the whole Singles Event debacle, they'd hung out a few more times. It was pleasant and lowkey for the most part, comprised of short meetings when they both had a moment in their busy schedules. When his mother had encouraged him to bring someone respectable to the family gala, which he was obligated to attend by blood and annoyance alone, Beaux had been the first and only person that had brightened his mind and remotely made the event seem palatable. Of course, he had the urge to bring some horrific bimbo that would make a fool of herself and disrupt things, but... as much as he didn't want to play into his mother's command, a chance to spend time with a certain angel was too tempting to pass up. Besides, it'd bring a whole different type of chaos to the table.

But that came with a whole host of issues that he hadn't thought of until he was standing there, dressed in his best noble suit. Outwardly he looked as cool as ever, even as people passed by him and ogled. Being the heir to the family that essentially ran and controlled Lyndon Port, he was immediately recognizable in this uppity garb. There were whispers since the whole town was also aware that he had snubbed the responsibility and fled to the Free Lands to make his own way. This was more or less the one time of year anyone was guaranteed to catch sight of the man in the accursed port town that tried its best to shackle him into a life he didn't want. But it wasn't the eyes that threatened his cool countenance, but rather, introducing Beaux to his family.

He didn't get along with his father, Pollux, at all. The man was horribly serious and somehow spoke volumes with a simple look, making him look the fool every time he tried to argue. And it was that disapproving look he always took issue with. He was a mother's boy and loved the woman deeply but she was a busybody and opinionated. This younger brothers were just typical brothers, though the one closer in age was always nipping at his heels and trying to prove himself a better heir, which was honestly fine with Cassian. It was the outdated traditions that kept the family business from passing to Quinn, despite Cassian's agreement that it should. His little sisters were precious and his favorites by far.

It was a bit too early to have Beaux meeting them, but also, this was just how the cards fell. Though they had no official relationship, at least to the noble it was more than friendship. No matter what he did, he just kept circling back to the silverette. If they ever had a future, he was certain Beaux deserved more than whatever Cassian would be able to give him. Money, despite how much he loved and enjoyed it, came with its own problems. The du Villanell business was not always clean and far from safe. Despite caring enough to want to save Beaux from it by depriving himself of the man, he was also powerless to his whims. As he'd thought a million times, he wasn't a good man.

Bringing Beaux would invite lots of invasive questions and lots of assumptions. His family would assume they were more than they were. What would they think about it? Cassian's fluid sexuality was never an issue, but there were expectations on him as heir. He was to provide a child, and obviously, having more than passing flings with men was ultimately frowned on simply for bloodline reasons. It might be awkward for Beaux, but Cassian was both going to love and hate their disapproval.

Then there was just all the other high society crap he'd have to expose Beaux to. He'd never enjoyed it much himself. Self-important fat cats that were either nobles from neighboring towns or kissing up to said nobles, along with wealthy businessmen looking for a leg up over someone else, all keeping their poisoned daggers hidden behind smiling, wine-stained lips. Beaux was a target, a weakness, an opportunity, a curiosity. This was undoubtedly a bad idea, but maybe it'd end up being fun.

Cassian cleared all the worrying thoughts out and put on a charming smile as he spotted a dark spot cresting the closest hill. He'd warned his date as much as he could that the Gala was a big to-do and had sent a tailor to make him appropriate clothing with his input but up to the quality and expense expected. The navyette was excited to see what the result was and had brought a beautiful light-blue corsage to pin on his lapel. The shiny black carriage sporting the du Villanell crest, gilded in gold and silver with a prim and proper driver seated stoically in front rolled up to the gate and eased the dark unicorns to a stop. The servent seated at the back of the carriage hopped down and reached the carriage door with long strides, opening the door for Cassian to step inside and seat himself. The interior was crushed velvet of the richest amethyst, and the general darkness compared to the brightness of the setting sun robbed his lone eye of its ability to see for a few moments while it struggled to adjust. Even so, he smiled and spoke. "Glad you could make it, Beaux," he greeted warmly, straightening his white jacket. He aimed to use the short ride out to the estate to answer any questions the angel might have, or at least prepare him a little more for what to expect.

He should probably go ahead and start apologizing.

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Re: Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Me9gqVH

Beaux was being a worry wart, as per usual.

The ride to Lyndon Port had been near torture for a mind that ran a mile a minute with nothing to distract the angel from his ruminations. The fancy carriage that Cassian sent had shown up to collect him while he was at work instead of at his apartment like he was expecting. Some of the other employees had seen the driver dressed to the nines enter the bakery and ask for Beaux. They’d seen him rush from the building with a look of panic and enter the prestigious black and gold carriage, which left as quickly as it had arrived. The whole journey he worried about what his coworkers would think, knowing the word would get around the bakery and he’d have to have a very good explanation for all the pomp and circumstance. He was dreading it.

Since the moment Cassian had invited him to the du Villanell gala, an apprehensive twist had formed in the angel’s gut. His anxieties usually ebbed and flowed like the tide, but this feeling didn’t go away in the time leading up to the day of the event. This was a big deal, he was meeting Cassian’s family. Was it too soon to meet them? What would they think of Cassian inviting him? Would they approve? Beaux worried that it could change the nature of their undefined relationship for better or for worse. They were more than friends, that much he knew. The two had been hanging out now and then after a date at a party in the tropics. The shy baker boy had found that their sporadic meetups were becoming the highlight of his week or month. He loved spending time with the navyette, so even though he fretted too much about this event he was excited to see Cassian again.

Beaux fidgeted in the carriage as it crested the last hill before approaching Lyndon Port, his back straight as a board against the luscious purple velvet seats. Clasped together in his lap, his hands sported knuckles white from a tight grip. The driver had explained that they would pick up Cassian at Lyndon Port before heading to the du Villanell estate. That moment couldn’t come soon enough.

As the carriage slowed and the doors finally opened to allow Cassian entrance, Beaux nearly leapt from his seat. “Cassian!” he exclaimed in a mix of relief and excitement, glad to finally have some company. Embarrassed by his own enthusiasm, the angel forced himself to sit properly and take a deep breath. “It’s great to see you. Thank you for inviting me, it's my pleasure to accompany you.”

“What do you think of my outfit? The tailor you sent was excellent,” Beaux asked, gesturing to his clothing. The jacket of his suit was long, reaching down to his mid thigh if he were to stand up. It was a soft, shiny blue covered with swirling silver embroidery in plant-esque design. Below it was a crisp white dress shirt with silver cufflinks, adorned on the collar by a jabot of ruffled lace. Black pants tucked down into white boots with blue accents and a slight heel. The whole outfit felt very odd to Beaux, it seemed familiar in a way that he couldn’t place. As far as he could remember, he’d never worn anything this fancy. Not like he could afford it on his salary at the bakery anyway. That wasn’t to say he didn’t get compensated fairly. These clothes were very clearly made of the finest materials by a high quality tailor. He still felt embarrassed to be gifted such luxuries by Cassian. As undeserving as he felt, he would never protest too much for worry of upsetting or offending the noble navyette he was growing to adore.

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Re: Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

No sooner had the heir's rear touched the cushion of the seat when the door snapped closed and the carriage lurched back into motion. He could tell by the brisk pace that the servants were uptight about running late, though it was no fault of theirs. Cassian deliberately timed things so that he'd be late for the gala. One of many planned annoyances and slights for his family's enjoyment.

Pfft,” Cassian snorted, finding the initial excitement over their reunion horribly cute. He didn’t need to say it, his face was clear enough from the lift of his brow and the smile he’d barely beaten back into a smirk. However as Cass's eye adjusted and Beaux composed and gestured to his newly tailored wear, the expression of “so cute” dissolved into a look the angel should be used to by now. Even if the naive man was clueless about its meaning, Cassian’s moment of hand-pressing and suddenly measured expression of concentration was what he did every time he felt this flush of impulse. Horny silence. He needed just a few seconds to pull it together or he might eat the angel man up.

“You look amazing,” he smiled appreciatively after the carnal had passed. Of course, it was blue. There could’ve been no better alternative. "I knew you would. The tailor could have been a complete fraud and you'd still make it look fantastic," the noble shamelessly flirted, though it didn't make it any less true. He watched closely for the flustered reaction. Leaning forward, he reached out to touch the ornate embroidering at the cuff of the jacket, but really it was just an excuse to touch his date. "I dare say you may outshine the du Villanells themselves," Cassian smirked wickedly.

"So, do you have any thoughts or concerns before we arrive at House Snob?" he asked, just on the off chance Beaux had started to notice the gravity of the invitation he'd accepted. Cassian had downplayed his status even when forced to reveal it at the Singles Event, but by now some pieces should've been falling into place from the tailor and the quality of the carriage alone. Fleuve'ir forbid if he'd asked anyone else about his noble family name.

Cassian seemed to be excited to see Beaux too, but in his usual aloof manner. That charming smirk never ceased to make his heart leap. The noble’s moment of recomposure didn’t go unnoticed by the angel, but he dismissed it as simply preparing for the last leg of the trip to the du Villanell estate. The evening was almost upon them and shortly they would be among Cassian’s family, friends, and acquaintances. The entertainer had to have some degree of worry about what might go down, right? Noble families were notoriously strict and ever-concerned about appearances. Who knew what they might think of Cassian bringing a male date, let alone an angel.

“Thank you.” Beaux shrugged his shoulders shyly as the navyette peppered him with flirtatious compliments and touched his sleeve. “You look great too!” he added, fumbling with the right words. Cassian’s appearance was attention-grabbing in the best way, elegant but with that flashy flair of gold and teal. The young man couldn’t tear his eyes away for a few moments. That pesky flush returned to Beaux’s cheeks, as it always did around Cassian. It felt like he might never get used to such blatant flirting. The attention made him glow, but also left him breathless like nothing else could.

“Oh, I-” the angel became flustered, “I wouldn’t want to steal the show from them, this is their event after all.” He fidgeted with his jacket sleeve, flattered but also now a little worried that he was overdressed. It would feel awful offending his date’s family in that way. They might think him an egomaniac, a narcissist! Beaux wanted to melt into the floor at the thought.

“Hmm…” he hummed thoughtfully as he watched the landscape pass by through the window. Truthfully, he had too many questions to ask before they arrived. It was hard to pick just a few. “Is there anything I should avoid doing, or any topic I shouldn’t discuss?”

Cassian chuckled as Beaux flustered in the face of his compliments. Ah, if only he could steal the show from his family! What a sight that would've been. More than he could ever hope to achieve no matter what depths of trollisms he stooped to, but alas, without an obscene amount of money to flaunt and too many people to know about it, there was nothing Beaux could do to make this about himself. And since Cassian was reasonably sure Beaux was basically a 'penniless' bakery employee, he was safe from that scenario. The most attention he'd get was for being on Cassian's arm... and perhaps for... other more obvious reasons that he couldn't wait for their reactions to.

"Not that I can think of," Cassian replied to his question. Could he have probably provided a few things? Certainly, but he wasn't one to encourage people to be unauthentic. With all the political masks of politeness in the room, he was sure no one would outright shame or bash Beaux for anything he said... not to his face. Except...

"Oh, my brother!" he exclaimed suddenly, wrinkling his nose like he'd smelled something sour. "Quinlin. Don't listen to anything he says. In fact, try to avoid him altogether. He's atrocious and... lies. All the time."

Okay, that last part was actually Cassian telling a lie, but it was for the best. Quinn never missed an opportunity to knock Cassian down a peg or two when he could, and while that was fine in familial company, in front of a man he had every intention of wooing? No. Quinn knew too much dirt.

"Besides that, my dad is likely not to speak to you, so don't be offended. He's not one for small talk of any kind and only really speaks when he must for business. My mother is quite the opposite. She might corner you and talk you into the grave. My other siblings will likely be off doing their own things with friends. Just be your lovely self and everything should be fine," he explained, though he didn't know that for sure. In a way, it was already a slight against Beaux to be Cassian's guest so much of the evening and what to expect was a mystery.

There were at least a couple of caveats. "No matter what happens, at least the food will be delicious. And, should you wish, we can leave whenever you want," the noble smiled, though that last part was more for himself than his date. He was obligated to make an appearance and stay as long as he tolerated, not consign himself to endless torture.

“Your brother? Of course, I’ll do my best to stay out of his path,” Beaux agreed with a dutiful nod. He trusted that Cassian would guide him away from those who might cause the two trouble. The last thing he wanted was to accidentally cause some sort of confrontation by talking to the wrong person. This Quinnlin sounded like the kind of person he would steer clear of in his life anyway. Beaux deeply disliked compulsive liars, and that was saying something - the angel rarely felt a strong negative feeling towards anyone.

The description of Cassian’s parents made them seem pretty nice. Maybe Beaux was just an optimist. Stoic types were bearable, though their silence made him a little nervous. The chatterboxes were no problem at all. He liked socializing a lot, and when someone else did all the talking it was that much easier! The explanation made it sound like the night would be a breeze. The angel tried to push down his worries and focus on the exciting parts of the gala ahead of them.

Beaux nodded in agreement, feeling a twinge of relief that they weren’t bound to staying for the whole event. There was a way out if things didn’t go great. “I’m excited for the food too,” he replied, baby blue eyes nearly sparkling as he conjured up images in his head of elegant cakes he could only dream of making and a chocolate fountain that nearly reached the ceiling. Of course his mind would jump to dessert first. At the very least, he could bring some ideas back home with him to apply to his own baking. “What kind of dishes do you think there will be?”

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Re: Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

Post by Cassian Wed Apr 20, 2022 5:49 am

Cassian grinned at the man across from him. Cute, thoughtful, and the way he brightened about the food was encouraging. He didn't want Beaux to have a horrible time, though surely he would eventually do something that might not be the best for him to experience. Still, as long as they made a hasty exit afterward...

"Remember the food from the beach party?" he asked, and though it would normally be a rhetorical question, he was actually curious what, if anything, Beaux remembered from that evening. There had been a lot of alcohol involved and the angel had been quite wasted by the time they partook of the tasty offerings. "Because it'll be like those, only better! The best of the best, the most expensive of meats and sweets, the rarest of vegetables and toppings and spices. The most famous chef in all of Mirinah is regularly blessed with our patronage. He's a favorite amongst the nobles and nigh impossible to enjoy anywhere else."

As they rode through town, Cassian would go into more details about the edible fare being offered, which really was the only tolerable part of the galas in his humble opinon.

The cobblestone pathway on the edge of Lyndon Port proper turned more level and meticulously maintained as they left booming capitalism and trade behind for the countryside of wealthy mansions. Perfectly-shaped trees passed their windows at even intervals with patches of wildflowers in between. Then the homes started to come into view, some wooden, some stone, some brick, but all expensive and well-made. Each seemed larger than the next, occupied by some of Mirinah's wealthiest upper crust in the trade industry and vacation homes for those who primarily lived in Engloria but wanted easy access to the ocean and its ports.

The largest of these loomed over the others, built upon a hill and segregated by a large, wrought-iron fence. The du Villanell estate was a marvelous plot of sprawling forest acreage, dotted with countless servants to tend to the grounds. The gates were currently open, a rarity, and the path leading inside and to the turnaround was lined with carriages nearly as extravagant as the one they currently enjoyed. The mansion itself was hewn from pale stone with a red terracotta roof. Matching but smaller buildings serving as the servant quarters sat at a distance at the back of the lot, beyond the pools and gardens. Their carriage was allowed ahead of the others waiting and their door was opened. Cassian hopped out and reached a hand back for Beaux's.

As they entered the manor, the inside was just as impressive as the outside. They'd had to walk up some stairs to reach the massive double doors, yet had to walk down twice as many to get to the room for the gala. Lights were elegantly strung up everywhere amongst swagged tapestries and hanging crystals. A live band played toward the back of a cavernously large room. Long, fancy tables framed the room, with the one furthest away adorned with a fancier bouquet of flowers than the rest, signaling the host's table. Butlers armed with food and drink scurried through the crowd like silk through fingers, without a single misstep or bump. Everyone in attendance was dressed to the hilt in glistening suits and flowing gowns as they spun like music box dancers in the center of the marble floor.

As they began to descend the stairs, a servant thunked a heavy sceptor on the floor. "ANNOUNCING, MASTER CASSIAN DU VILLANELL AND HIS GUEST'S ARRIVAL!" he bellowed, to which Cassian gifted with an elongated eye roll. "That was wholly unnecessary, Bathowl," he scolded, but it was clear that Bathowl hardly answered to the heir by the snort that escaped his turned-up nose.

Either way, they started their descent, under the watchful eyes of an entire room of people with deep pockets and even deeper thirsts for power. "Well? Any last reservations?" Cassian asked, smirking at all the whispers going around. The prodigal heir made it, albeit late. And with an angel on his arm? Scandalous! Delicious.

"Presuming you don't want to run away, please. I will go where ever my guest wishes to go first."

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Me9gqVH

“I do,” Beaux replied, vaguely enough to not let on just how much he remembered of the food from the beach party. While he knew they had eaten from a large platter of various things, he couldn’t recall exactly what the cuisine had been. There were little blips of memory here and there in the sea of brain fog from that night. Perhaps some of the food tonight would jog his memory a little, as Cassian explained that it was similar fine dining they had experienced before. The angel couldn’t help his mouth from watering a little as his date explained more while the carriage made its way closer to the estate.

Beaux hadn’t realized just how prestigious of an area they were in until their ride pulled into an elegant estate unlike anything he’d seen before. Sprawling lawns were enclosed by a fancy iron fence. His jaw nearly dropped at the sight of the enormous, beautiful red-roofed building looming closer by the second. The driver skipped the line of other carriages waiting and took them straight to the front. That was the first inkling to Beaux that the du Villanells might be more important than he had realized. He buried the thought as they came to a stop and Cassian led him by the hand toward the massive front doors.

There was so much to take in that his eyes wandered like a vagabond in the countryside. Lights and crystals hung across the room, underneath which there were tables decorated just as elegantly. A pleasing music reached his ears, giving the chatter in the air some liveliness. People moved about and danced as if they were divine beings, dressed in outfits out of fairytales. Beaux felt like he was in one right now, being escorted towards the stairs by a charming one-eyed prince towards a ballroom full of kings and queens.

The sudden announcement of their arrival by a nearby servant startled Beaux right out of his daydream. Eyes throughout the room were drawn to the two as they began their descent down the large staircase. The angel had never felt so small. He remembered the stares of jealousy from the beach party, but this was different. These gazes held power, sharp like glass and heavy on his shoulders with each new set that landed on them. Cassian asked if he had any last reservations. It was too late to leave now, he was committed to enjoying everything this evening had to offer. “Nope!” Beaux chirped with a cheerful smile.

By the time they reached the bottom of the stairs, his shoulders were tense and he’d tucked his wings in close to his body. The shy young man wasn’t accustomed to that much pressure. As much as Beaux wanted to run away, his second choice would have to do. “Well, Master du Villanell,” he teased, “you talked so highly of the food it’s all I can think about. Let’s eat!”

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Re: Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

Post by Cassian Wed Apr 20, 2022 10:59 pm

“A fine choice,” Cassian responded in faux-haughty mockery, leading his date toward the humongous table that the platter-wielding butlers buzzed around. With a simple gesture, they were swarmed with offerings of spiced, expensive cuts of meats and various things drizzled in honey sourced from the finest bees in Ilyanor. The du Villanells had some trade partners in one of the more vyldergold-driven elf tribes, which gave them access to fruits and veggies that most mainland citizens had never seen, let alone tasted. And they were all cooked to perfection. "Take your pick," the heir told his date, his own eye skimming the hovering plates before them, as well as the table beyond for anything missing. He procured his own plate of favorite honeyed fruits with a lovely soft cheese and gold flecks for decadent decoration.

Almost as quickly as every eye had turned on them, appraising them (mostly Beaux and his wings), most quickly turned away and back to whatever business they’d been previously engaged in. Unlike the beach party, Cassian was not a means to an end here. He was the heir, yes, but a wayward one that they hoped to never have to deal with in place of his father. At best he would be a weakness, either to the patriarch of the family or himself. The jealousy wasn’t as present. The eyes (except one set across the expanse) remaining were from the few allowed entry from the lower class, and those were identical to the types of stares Beaux would be more familiar with. They would grab at anything to get a leg up.

The one set that didn't fit any of the staring criteria previously mentioned belonged to a pale man now making a very elegant but quick beeline through the crowd. He looked every bit the prince he envisioned himself as, dressing in an extravagant silk suit of white with royal purple and gold accents. Pale blue hues never left his snacking brother so that the man, elusive and uncouth as he was, wouldn't be able to slink off into the night after making a brief appearance. Though he had a soft face, Quinlin was brimming with vindictive energy for Cassian.

"Brother!" he called once he was too close for the other to run, and in response, Cassian froze with the hairs rising on the back of his neck.

"So soon?" the navyette asked, though seemingly to no one and everyone at the same time. A hand clapped onto his shoulder, shaking it vigorously. While it appeared friendly enough to the naked eye, the stiff smile and slightly puckered brow betrayed the younger sibling's ill intentions.

The two, despite being opposing shade values of a blue color pallet, were very clearly brothers. Their faces shared similar features, handsome ones, though Cassian's were more rough-and-tumble while Quinlin's were more refined and aristocratic. Their personalities were very opposite in most cases, which was obvious in how they carried themselves, though they spoke very similarly. How they had ever gotten along as children was a mystery.

"Nice of you to grace us with your presence!" Quinn smiled, looking from Cassian to Beaux for an appraising up-and-down. He quirked a brow as he studied the fluffy white wings sprouting from their favorite tailor's creation. Jaquez probably still had indigestion from being forced to dress a Gaiyan. The angel was pretty, but nothing special... and definitely not Cassian's normal choice for company.

"Same as every year, and yet you always act surprised. You don't have the face for coy, Quinn" Cassian smiled back, patting his brother a bit too hard on the back. The two were clearly practiced at biting at each other in the presence of important people. It looked pleasant but was hardly. Pretty standard for competitive siblings, though.

"And you've brought someone! Also same as every year!" Quinn added, annunciating every syllable clearly so the snarky double entendre would hit home for his date. "What's this one's name?"

Cassian's brow twitched irritably. "Oh, my date? His name is Beaux, do try to be polite. You should introduce yourself properly, or has my absence dulled your manners?" Of course, Quinn was already going for the easy target, putting doubts in his angel's head. "Do so quickly, though. Beaux and I should really move on and enjoy the gala before Quibbling Quinn makes an appearance."

Quinn would not let that jab lie. "Well, with the size of your plate, Quibbling Quinn would have some company in Corpulent Cass. Do be mindful of how much you eat, dear brother. You worked so hard to drop all that wei--"

"Introductions! Beaux, this is my brother, Quinlin. Since he has no manners, his big brother will have to step up and help him out! Wouldn't want our family name dragged through the mud by more than one noble spawn, now would we?" Cassian interjected, forcing a subject change. This was exactly what he was afraid of. His early years coming up. Every year, the same battle.

"Ahem, right, how rude of me," Quinn smirked, bowing gently to Beaux. "As he said, I am Quinlin du Villanell. Pleased to make your acquaintance and welcome to our estate. I must say, we don't often get angels as guests. Gaiyans normally find all of this regality quite boorish and sinful, but you must be quite different to come on Cassian's arm," he said, polite enough, implications aside. It was clear his ire was less with Beaux directly, though he did seem to have some preconceptions about the angel's presumed race. "This is a special circumstance indeed. Tell me a little about yourself, won't you, Beaux? I'm terribly curious, forgive me!"

So much for making a quick getaway.

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Re: Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Me9gqVH

Beaux’s eyes widened at the sheer amount of food that was available to them. Butlers shuffled around in a never ending dance, offering platters to the gala guests of the finest meats, cheeses, desserts, and other delicacies. How could anyone pick just a few things? The angel wanted to try them all. As Cassian claimed his honeyed fruits and cheese, Beaux proceeded to pick a little bit off of every platter he could reach. Each sample wasn’t more than a bite’s worth, he didn’t want to seem greedy. He deemed it unlikely that he would ever be presented with such a vast expanse of unique dishes ever again, so it was only natural to take advantage of it!

The food was just as excellent as it looked. Beaux was distracted from a bite of a particularly delicious vegetable dish by an approaching voice calling out above the other voices around them. Beside him, Cassian bristled like a cornered badger. Seeing the navyette so tense was quite startling. Based on what he had heard earlier, there would be one person in attendance that irritated the noble like nothing else. The source of the voice was a young man dressed in an elegant mix of white, purple, and gold. He looked very much like Cassian, even having blue hair too, though his features seemed more perfected and soft. Immediately he reminded Beaux of a swan - pretty from a distance but dangerous if one were to get too close.

The younger du Villanell had greeted his brother tauntingly before turning his gaze to give the angel a once-over. The only sign Beaux gave of the effects of that scrutinous look was the tightening of his grip on the plate in hand. This was definitely the Quinn that Cassian had warned of, so he kept a wary edge and his mouth shut for the time being. The quips back and forth between the two entertained but also concerned the angel. It was clear the politeness was just a cover for a bitter dislike shared by both.

Of course it made sense that Cassian had brought dates to events like this before, but the emphasis Quinn put on the words sent a jab of self-doubt right to Beaux’s heart. He started to worry that he was just a replaceable pawn in this brotherly quarrel. The seeds of doubt were planted, but not allowed to grow. Cassian had claimed his brother was a liar and the angel trusted his date fully, if not blindly.

Beaux gave a bright smile as his name was mentioned, but it was lost in the continuing back and forth. The stony politeness and veiled insults seemed neverending, but when they started calling each other nicknames, Cassian had forced a subject change by introducing Beaux. The angel still wanted to make a good impression with his date’s family, even his pesky brother. Perfect manners were of the utmost importance to him tonight. Thus, when Quinn bowed in greeting, he returned the gesture moments later. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Quinlin,” Beaux replied genuinely, though he wondered if there were some kind of customary formalities he was missing. He couldn’t imagine it would go down well with Cassian if he called Quinn ‘sir’ or anything of the like.

“It does seem… like a lot,” Beaux offered in slight agreement for fear of exposing himself as more of an outsider than he already seemed. Most people assumed he was a Gaiyan anyway, so it was easier to roll with it. Besides, he didn’t want to give Quinn any more reason to pry into him like he was a clam hosting a pearl. “However, it’s my honor to accompany Cassian this evening,” the angel concluded with an affectionate glance at the one-eyed man next to him.

“Er… I live and work in Engloria. I moved there a few months ago,” Beaux started, not really sure what there was to say about himself that would interest someone that practically had the world at their disposal. “It’s quite a lovely place! It’s where Cassian and I met.” The more he thought about it, the more he realized that anything he said would paint him as a boring commoner with nothing impressive to talk about. Am I really that bland? he balked at the idea, fighting down a rising existential crisis.

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Re: Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

Post by Cassian Sat Apr 23, 2022 9:36 am

"Engloria?" the younger sibling asked, tilting his head thoughtfully. "I thought you rarely left the islands other than to make up some new outlandish story. What on Vyldermire were you doing there?"

"If you must know, I had met mother for a visit and then happened by the bakery where Beaux works," the elder du Villanell present answered with a slight smile. The memory was a good one. Beaux and that sweater pulled over his beautiful wings. He'd looked like a humpback! So silly.

"Of course, it was a bakery," Quinn simpered, slyly pinching Cassian's side. "I thought you didn't want to get fa--"

"Don't say it!" Cassian warned in response, his cheeks darkening with embarrassment. His chubby childhood was a very sore spot. He'd worked hard to overcome some of his... less appreciated qualities from his youth. He'd worked really hard on his charming and aloof persona. His popular, entertainer swagger. He wasn't a chunky nerd anymore!

His insecurities (that he was trying very hard to keep secret) aside, he couldn't help but be impressed with how Beaux was handling things. It wasn't outright hostile, but dealing with people as full of themselves as Quinn-- the man really leaned into the whole 'noble' thing-- wasn't something everyone could do. He'd certainly brought a few randos just to wreak havoc, but they could never get passed the first conversation without outing themselves as either clout chasers or low-born fools. That was exactly what he wanted. But not now, since this one he was serious about, and gloriously Beaux had as much class as he assumed.

Quinlin seemed to be in the same mindset as Cassian. Quirking a brow, he peered at Beaux, face unreadable but at the very least more genuinely interested in the angel. "But for him to manage to live in Engloria... perhaps I misspoke, this one does seem to have some class..." he muttered into a pensive coiled fist, as if he hated to admit it. But then the suspiciously sweet smile returned and he shot a glance over at his brother. "...In addition to being male. Change is good for the heart," the steel-bluette lilted. He sensed something, and while whatever it was pleased him, it was hard to say it would bode well for Cassian if Quinn was happy. "You should take him to meet mother."

Ah, yes. Their mother. Cassian was a mommy's boy to be certain, but that came with its own set of problems. Maybe not so much so soon. "Oh, we will. I know better than to duck out without giving mom a hug."

It seemed Quinn had had his fun for the moment. "Be sure that you do, though, you know father expects us all at his table. If you don't show up this time, I'm quite certain he'll cut mother's fund off just to get to you. Don't take too long, father is a timely man, unlike you. And you must bring Beaux. I'll make sure they set him a place."

And with that, he politely bowed to Cassian's guest and gracefully melded back into the crowd with deftness only a rich kid could.

Cassian released the slightest of breaths once the encounter was over, looking down at his plate of honeyed fruits with thinly veiled disappointment and wistfulness. Abandoning it, he simply handed it off to a passing butler who took it in stride but had an idea to cover his sudden change of heart about the flurry of food.

"I guess we should be mindful of our snacks if we are to have a proper dinner at the head table," he told Beaux, but he didn't look the least bit enthused about it. Just being at the gala stifled his wild spirit more than any hangover could. And yet there was a sparkle in his eye when he looked at the angel. No matter what happened, he'd enjoy it because he had a wonderful date.

Stepping closer, he tilted his head and smiled fondly, reaching out as if to fix a rogue strange of silver. Always an excuse to touch him, no matter how innocently. "Good boy," he rumbled under his breath, flirty praise followed by an almost smug smirk. "So, that was Quinlin and you handled that marvelously. Is there anything you can't do?"

Beaux caught the slight upturn of Cassian’s lips when he explained how they had met. He tried to suppress his own embarrassed smile as he remembered that afternoon. The navyette had been the first person to flirt relentlessly with him and give him the confidence to not hide his wings anymore. The fears seemed so ridiculous now, but he would always remember that day fondly.

In all the time they had spent together, Beaux had never seen Cassian be anything other than nonchalant and self-assured. He seemed to ooze confidence. To see him get flustered was so unexpected that the angel didn’t know what to do. Admittedly, he found it terribly cute. However, it was clear that Quinn was bringing up sore subjects if it caused this kind of reaction in his older brother. Whatever it was, Cassian was shutting down the conversation before it could even happen. The silverette glanced at the younger du Villanell, distrust in his eyes. Quinn’s cruel comments were upsetting, but the angel wasn’t assertive enough to speak up against him.

Beaux felt a little pride in himself. Quinn had somewhat reconsidered his preconceptions about the baker. That was a victory, as little as it was. However, the triumph was short lived as the steely-blue haired man pointedly reminded them of the fact that they were both men. The angel’s stomach dropped. So far, they hadn’t had any issues with homophobia on their dates. This was different, this was Cassian’s family and they were nobles. While not all of high society was disapproving, it was unfortunately common. Appearances and carrying on the family name were very important in the upper class. Beaux clenched his hands together tightly behind his back as his worries were rustled up full force.

Quinn made his departure after instructing Cassian on what was required of him. They could relax a little now that the pest was gone. Beaux was about to take more bites of his food, but his date suggested they save room for the main course at the head table. Something about him seemed deflated now, but the angel didn’t want to upset him by asking so he just complied with the request. “Good idea!” He handed his own plate off with a grateful smile to a passing butler. The delicious food would have to wait until later.

Something about the way Cassian praised him made Beaux’s knees weak. That tone of voice kickstarted his heartbeat. He was used to the entertainer flirting with him, but not in such a husky manner. “Th-thank you,” he replied, attempting to compose himself and leaning into the hand that brushed his hair away. “Well, I’m sure there’s plenty I can’t do,” he deflected shyly, “but that went better than I was expecting… he’s quite unpleasant. Has he always been that way?” Though Quinn was nowhere near them anymore, he still refrained from saying anything insulting about the younger du Villanell even if his treatment of Cassian made Beaux feel unusually protective.

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Empty Re: Gala du Villanell [Beaux]

He only grew more smug as he ruffled the angel's feathers, though honestly he was only making it more difficult for himself. Beaux wasn't the only one that 'suffered' in this flirtatious game. “Since his first demanding breath, which is unfortunately one of my very first memories,” Cassian chuckled, his hand supposedly fixing the hair and settling more along his cheek as his date leaned into it. Despite the dig at the 'Gaiyan's' gender, no one else seemed to care in the least, especially not Cassian.

"He just very badly wants to take my place as heir and run the company, so he seizes every opportunity to tear me down," the noble continued, giving the cheek a brush despite the non-romantic conversation. He could be talking to Beaux about potatoes and still not be able to keep his hands off of him. Sliding his hand down a quite beautiful face and neck, his other joined it as he at least pretended to smooth Beaux's suit jacket. "Despite my efforts to let him have it all, my father won't take my no for an answer, straining our relationship, both of them, all the more." The hands continued their light descent down along both of the angel's arms until his hands slipped clasped his dates and he began a slow walk backward toward the dancing crowd. "Even in shameful exile for my antics, he keeps my cage prepared for my eventual return. It's tradition, and he's nothing if not painfully stuck in the old ways. Somehow Quinn deflects his frustration with our father onto me, since he would never dare defy or disrespect the man."

His explanation and walk backward stopped simultaneously as he found a nice place among wealthy couples he knew and trusted to be the less awful of the bunch. They were people he went to school with or had worked with in the past before his departure. They only exchanged brief nods, as Cass much preferred to keep his eye on his guest. Gently looping an arm around Beaux's waist, he pulled him a little closer. "Dance with me," he said, though it wasn't demanding. But it also wasn't really a request, though the man could certainly decline. It was the best bet they had for any privacy. Dancing was the best medium for conversation at galas like this. It was either this or the more official backrooms.

"Feel free to ask me things," he prompted, preparing to begin a nice, slow waltz with his date, should he not escape his grasp. Perhaps Cassian was feeling a little open, if not vulnerable. He'd been rather secretive in the past when Beaux asked things, but he wanted to make sure the angel was comfortable in his company. "I will probably answer them," Cassian followed with a light tease and a wink.

Gala du Villanell [Beaux] Me9gqVH

Cassian’s hands trailing his face and clothes were increasingly distracting. It took a focused effort to listen to what the du Villanell heir was saying. The more Beaux learned about the family predicament that his date was in, the more he worried. Pressure and expectations from his father, retaliation from his ambitious brother - there was no easy solution for the noble. “I’m sorry,” the angel commiserated. “What an awful situation to be placed on your shoulders.” Cassian’s wandering hands reached his own and guided the two towards the many dancing gala guests. Beaux gave a gentle squeeze to the fingers in his grasp and followed along without resistance. There was a newfound softness to his blue gaze when he beheld the navyette.

“It would be my pleasure.” They began a slow waltz at Cassian’s request, mingling among the other slow dancing couples on the ballroom floor. The movements came as naturally as breathing to Beaux without even realizing it. There wasn’t much space between them in the waltz position as they made gradual circles around the floor. Something about slow dancing was so romantic to him and set his heart aflutter. The angel was a sucker for romance and often daydreamed about idealistic love scenes.

“Only probably?” Beaux flashed a grin before taking a moment of silent thought. Cassian had given him free reign to ask questions. There were so many things he wanted to know about the enigmatic man before him. The entertainer had shed his shroud of mystery tonight and opened up a little to his date. Beaux felt honored to be allowed this glimpse at a more vulnerable Cassian. He got the feeling this was a very rare occurrence, so he would treasure it and avoid prying too deep. The last thing he wanted was to take it too far and be closed off from this side of Cassian.

“How does your mother feel about your situation being the heir?”
