Miscellaneous Lore MiscLore

General Information
This section and its following posts will be regularly updated with approved community suggestions for minor details aimed to flesh out the world of Vyldermire for better character immersion. We will cover such things as unique and original plants, diseases, drugs, minor gods, and possibly more in the future. These tidbits of information can be freely referenced in posts and plots on the site. They cannot be used in PVP or PVE combat and will not affect stats.

Though they can be loosely based on real-world things in each of the categories, submissions cannot be the actual real-life thing. There are some real-life things already in existence in Vyldermire that were likely brought by Otherworlders, like potatoes and other very common veggies, some flowers that share the same name, common real-life illnesses, and even versions of real-life religions and their gods [Please see Religion in Vyldermire]. However, keep in mind that even though these similar real-life things exist, they aren't completely identical to their real-world versions due to years of Vyldermirean influence, but they also do not require listing.

Submissions should possess some fantastic property or magical uniqueness to make them interesting and important. Give plants fun and magical effects! Invent new diseases with either dire or fun symptoms and very specific cures! Create some fantasy drugs with interesting side effects that hurt, heal, or add a little spice to recreational hours! Make up some minor gods that embody serious and/or silly concepts with interesting rituals that may or may not actually be real!

Submissions, once approved and added, will be officially part of the lore of our site and thus subject to use by the site as a whole. They will potentially be altered as needed by the admin and development team as things progress. Please make sure you are prepared to creatively part with your submissions, as you will no longer retain control once they are approved. Unapproved submissions will not be recognized sitewide and, in some cases, will not be able to be used in personal plot or posts if it is deemed that they break lore.

Please use the following template for submissions!
Code:

[b]Category:[/b] [plant, disease, drug, minor gods, other]
[b]Location(s):[/b] [when applicable, usually for plants and minor gods]
[b]Description:[/b] [please be as detailed but as concise as possible but try not to exceed 300 words. plants: what does it look like and what does it do? diseases: what are the symptoms, means of contraction, and possible treatments or cures? drugs: what are its uses, how potent is it, what are its effects on the body and mind, and if it is ultimately harmful or helpful? minor gods: what are the local beliefs, what aspects of life do they embody (up to 3), what offerings do they like if any? please do not reference nobility or any other position in these submissions and take care not to alter existing lore or locations, as per usual. it is not recommended to reference or invent too much history in descriptions at the risk of conflicts with existing lore, so please keep to facts and applicable details of function rather than who discovered it or where they were first seen, etc.]
[b]Picture Link[/b]: [optional but encouraged for plants. please do not include images that could be used as face claims for minor gods, instead opt for one-off art, your own art, or nothing. size images to 150x150 pixels.]

Miscellaneous Lore Plant

BITEBULB

Location:
Outer Realm

Description:
Bitebulbs are carnivorous plants to watch out for in the dark undergrowth. The orangy bulbs are filled with sap and delicious, luring in fingers, monsters, and insects alike. The mouth-like leaves around the base will snap closed around their sweet trap, penetrating the skin and feeding on the blood of their victims. The bites are incredibly itchy and painful, often requiring medical attention to extract the hair-thin teeth left behind. The venom can also cause fainting and a decrease in motor skills, but the bulbs make fantastic candy or sweet additions to foods and drinks.

DRAGONBLOOM

Location:
Everywhere there's sufficient moisture and no snow

Description:
Dragonbloom flowers are generally fist-sized red flowers that grow sporadically in warmer climates. Unlike their sister plant, Dragontongue, Dragonblooms turn into flames and violently explode when disturbed, making them quite the hazard to adventurers and surroundings alike. In dry seasons, it's emphasized that these plants be carefully avoided or snipped at the base before they can turn to flame to prevent forest fires. Though they are viewed as nuisance weeds in towns, properly plucked Dragonbloom petals can be chewed to keep warm in cold climates, making them quite popular in the northern parts of Mirinah.

DRAGONTONGUE

Location:
Everywhere there's sufficient moisture and no snow

Description:
Dragontongue plants look like small leafy plants, though they do have small pale blooms on the stems. The blooms, when dried, are used as a common spice to add some heat to dishes. The leaves, when rubbed against something, spontaneously burst into small flames, an effect that persists even when picked and dried. As such, they are used often by adventurers to start campfires and light torches. When dried and rolled to carry multiple, they are sometimes called "matches" or "lighters" by otherworlders.

DROWNING DRUSILLA

Location:
Bodies of Water

Description:
Drowning Drusillas are vine-like water plants that grow along the bottom of rivers, lakes, ponds, and oceans. Swimmers should always be diligent to avoid drowning, because they lash out in a flash to wrap anyone or anything that gets too close, pulling them down in the watery depths. They also draw water predators for the free meals they trap.

FLEUVE'IR LANTERN

Location:
Everywhere

Description:
The petals of this flower are pearlescent and arch upward from the base like an ethereal crown around a glowing center. From that center a ball of light floats up and hovers just above the petals, intangible but warm to curious fingers. Fleuve'ir Lanterns glow where ever they grow, which can be anywhere from on trees, to the ground, to on rocks within any climate and as long as they leylines are strong. Within somewhere like Rivengate, they are much harder to grow and their glow is very dim. Once plucked, as long as they're in water, they will continue to glow. People use them as nightlights in homes, along walkways, and especially in Church of Fleuve'ir chapels as well as the chapels of the minor gods. Doctors see them as a blessing from Fleuve'ir, using them as a vomiting agent when something harmful has been ingested. When consumed, it induces glowy rainbow barfing, and is quite a popular prank or dare amongst young Vyldermireans.

FLOOMINI

Location:
Ilyanor

Description:
Whether Floomini were named after the Floomba monsters or vice versa is lost to time, but they are well-known plants growing on Floomin trees at the base of Dragonspear Peak that the creatures favor to feed on. These rainbow assortments of blooms have spindly petals and are chock full of pollen that has euphoric effects on people and beasts alike. One can't just pick a flower, though. It must be sniffed straight from the tree, otherwise, as soon as it is picked, it will shrivel and the pollen will disappear. There are a special few taught how to magically perserve it, and in this way it can be sold as a recreational drug or to doctors to make anti-depressants/anti-anxiety medicines.

JUBILEEF

Location:
Ilyanor, Dionalor Plains, Avalon Islands

Description:
Each Jubileef stalk grows a single, bright pink bloom with glowy spindles. They're so pretty that they induce a happy feeling in most people. Because of this, they are often cultivated and placed in homes, doctor's offices, and other places where people  may need a calming presence.

MEMORIA

Location:
Outer Realm

Description:
Memoria are gorgeous black flowers that grow everywhere someone has died in lands magically shaded from the sun's rays. If you listen very very closely in the dead of night, you can hear them whisper the deceased's last words.

MOONFLOWER

Location:
Outer Realm, Ilyanor

Description:
Moonflowers are large blue blooms that need lots of darkness to survive. Their petals are very sensitive to light and will turn to ash in direct sunlight, so they only grow in the Outer Realm and in the thickest forests and darkest caves of Ilyanor. Their nutrients are drawn from the light of the moon, which it then reflects at night for a soft glow. They are a fan favorite of many tea enthusiasts, for not only to the size of the petals great for large yields when dried, but when steeped they turn the water a pleasing cerulean hue and offer a calming, mellow sweetness that pairs well with a touch of honey.

PHANTASMIS

Location:
Outer Realm

Description:
Phantasmis are clear, weightless flowers that grow in the darkness of forests in the Outer Realm. They appear to have roots that stretch so deeply that they touch the leylines. Rumor has it, if someone brings one of these blooms something tangible belonging to a deceased person, the flower will draw an illusion of the person as they were in life. They will appear ghostly like the flower and might even be able to communicate for a short period of time. Whether the image Phantasmis produce is actually the soul of the dead person or just a magic trick drawing on the residual energy of the item is a mystery. In the absence of deliberately prompting one with items, disturbing these blooms can draw on the person's best dreams or worst nightmares and produce illusions of those as well, further complicating whether the images of dead people are "real" or not.

SEASHROOM

Location:
Oceans

Description:
Seashrooms grow on the bottom of the ocean. Unless one wants to go diving, they are only easily attained during the night of the Moondance Festival, when the oceans draw back. When consumed, they provide a wonderful calming effect that aids in meditating and improved mental health.

SONG SPOT

Location:
Ilyanor, Dionalor Plains, Viridia Overlook, Miriad, Avalon Islands

Description:
Song spots are small blue flowers that grow in large circles in flat, grassy fields. While harmless, they explode when disturbed by footsteps into shimmer powder that gets in the ears and causes affected people to hear music for hours.

SUNSERAY

Location:
Dragonspear Peak

Description:
Sunserays are rather rare flowers that grow alone and fairly spread out toward the top of Dragonspear Peak. They are the color of the purest sunlight and require a lot of it to grow healthy and strong. Though they are often sought out by all kinds as a magical healing herb, but they also make exquisite liquor when preserved and fermented. The spirit is then added to alcohols distilled from indigenous Ilyanor fruits into a very strong drink called Sweet Drop. It is enjoyed freely in Ilyanor but in the lands outside of the paradise, it is a rare and very expensive drink. Given most Gaiyans' distaste for materialism, it takes the odd viggrubbing native to bring shipments to the mainland to sell at a premium.

Miscellaneous Lore Drugs

FLOOM

Location:
Ilyanor

Description:
Only a handful of people know how to pluck and preserve the Floomini bloom for travel, drying it in a very special and magical way until it resembles a colorful teaball. They are packaged in little satchels for recreational use, and when held in the hand of the user with magic applied, the flower will momentarily return to the fresh state and puff out pollen for inhalation before returning to its dried state for three more uses. The pollen, once inhaled, causes a potent euphoria lasting 24 hours, where all negative thoughts and emotions are pushed to the back of the mind and only happiness and good thoughts persist. The catch is that all the negative things avoided come back two-fold the next day, making the user feel even worse, which can tempt some to continue use and put off feeling the bad stuff. Side-effects of continued use can present like a cold, nosebleeds, migraines, and general hangover symptoms. Stopping after prolonged use can cause withdrawal symptoms. Doctors have utilized Floom and modified it into more stable medicines with fewer side effects to be used for treating anxiety and depression long-term, or into slightly more potent tranquilizers for short-term use. Abusing the medicines will result in the same side effects as recreational use. Recreational Floom is most common to Gaiyans, though it is slowly spreading to the other races.

HYPHOX

Location:
Outer Realm

Description:
Hyphox, short for Hyperfocus, is a dingy gray serum contained in eyedroppers for use in the eyes. The serum is a witch's brew of salamander eyes, pond scum, dried moonflower, and magicked Exo-spine scales. Not only does it boost observational skills and brighten the colors around the user, but as the serum travels into the brain, it facilitates higher mental acuity. Users will be able to focus much more effectively, multitask, remember, and strategize with ease. This makes it a favorite among the elite and wealthy as it is good for growing businesses and making important decisions. Occasional use has little risks or side effects. One or two drops once a week in both eyes is fine, but there are those who abuse it. Taking more drops than recommended may cause individuals to be unable to control what they hyperfocus on and end up losing hours or days to a single task that may or may not be pointless, and may find themselves injured, starving, dehydrated, or worse. Using it in one eye induces rage and stimulates a part of the brain that allows for enhanced physical abilities at the risk of bodily harm and unintentionally hurting others. The desired recreational effect, though, is hyper-focusing on memories to remember and/or relive an event. Some very sad souls are hooked on it to relive better days or see loved ones again while they waste away in bed or in alleys. Side effects include temporary color blindness, brain fog, depression, agitation, bloody eyes, migraines, and forgetfulness in addition to aforementioned physical risks. Hyphox is most commonly used my Eldritch, though it is slowly catching on with humans in Newdale and spreading toward Engloria due to proximity.

PRIMAL

Location:
Northern Mirinah

Description:
There are those in the Anthro community that embrace their animalistic traits a bit more fanatically than the general population of Anthros. They grow berry bushes on the strongest leylines in Northern Mirinah, then ferment them in the same areas for maximum magical absorption and "blessing". The berries are then eaten or made into small batches of alcohol to drink. Though they know they have no true animal DNA or link to actual animals, they do believe that the magical deities that brought them into being meant for them to be more fearsome than humans and eldritch to assert dominance and never be controlled again. They wish to tap into their animalistic gods' natures even more than the Mystics of their race. Whether they truly accomplish this or not remains to be seen, but users of Primal can see, smell, and hear better than the average person. Though they are still people and by no means become animals, they may act more on primal instinct like beasts. Muscles will become more defined and bulge with continued use, ready to strike at a moment's notice, and some may grow sharper or longer claws. They essentially become apex predators and their moods become more unstable and volatile. Users are violent and intimidating physically and mentally. They believe that no one can stop them and that they are on top of the world. Side effects include heart palpitations, a berserk state where the user loses control, fits of rage, and increases in hunger, thirst, and libido. Withdrawl after long-term use can be quite devastating, with some slipping into comas as their bodies and minds reset to normal and others becoming extremely weakened and docile for anywhere from days to months. Anthros make up the majority of Primal users, though some dealers are starting to spread it, especially in underground fighting rings.

RIVER'S REEFER

Location:
Everywhere

Description:
Though it goes by many different names depending on location and race, this is the closest drug to what an Otherworlder from Earth might call "weed". Referring to Fleuve'ir's river for blessing Vyldermire with this magical grass, it is usually rolled in thin papers and smoked or baked into something tasty and sweet. Potentcy depends on who grew the plants or where they were naturally sourced from, though it is said the best variations come from secret places in Ilyanor and The Shambles. It is used recreationally for a mellow high with enhanced senses when users want to slow down, relax, and let their minds wander to less stressful, more enjoyable things. Variants might boast some different effects. Side effects may include decreased motor skills, lower inhibitions, increased heart rate, breathing problems, hallucinations, delusions, psychosis, and paranoia that are usually temporary but could persist with long-term abuse or use of high-potency variants. River's Reefer is fairly popular in most of Vyldermire.

Miscellaneous Lore Minor_gods

TABYTHI THE HELLCAT

Location:
Northern Miriad

Description:
Small chapels dedicated to Tabythi, the hellcat deity many Neko worship as their patron saint are all over Anthro territory. Regardless of sub-species, one might pray for the favor of the elements either in nature or magic, or appreciate the goddess's innate wildness by throwing wild parties!

FIDORIC THE AMAROK

Location:
Northern Miriad

Description:
Believed to have shared his godly blood with the Inu, Fidoric the Amarok is their patron saint. To those that worship the god, they seek the intimidating qualities of strength, comfort in loneliness, and for difficult times to pass swiftly. It's a favorite of warriors and businessmen alike.

TODANIA THE INARI MESSENGER

Location:
Northern Miriad

Description:
Todania the Inari Messenger is the patron saint of the Kitsune sub-species. The goddess's worshippers might come to offer prayers asking for words of wisdom from the gods and goddesses and ancestors to guide them. They are generally very spiritual people. They can also be elusive, sneaky, and deceptive if they observe Todania's more impish qualities, which many did during the war to stay alive.

LOLAR THE MOON RABBIT

Location:
Northern Miriad

Description:
Lapin regard Lolar the Moon Rabbit as the deity responsible for their existence and have thus made her their patron saint. Many flock to Lolar chapels to pray for healing and consult the priests and priestesses there for herbal remedies. Sometimes these chapels even become infirmaries and the attendants become more like nurses. It's tradition to visit at night if at all possible, and praying beneath the moonlight is said to facilitate healing and increase fertility.

MOTHHEBE THE ELDER DRAGON

Location:
Northern Miriad

Description:
Draconytes are among the most devout to the deity they believe they owe their blood to, their patron saint Mothhebe the Elder Dragon. Those that come to worship at Mothhebe chapels might be seeking the courage to begin new endeavors, or perhaps safety on long trips and adventures. More stationary believers might seek maturity and blessings for long life and the pursuit of worldly knowledge.

KESFAW THE PHOENIX

Location:
Northern Miriad

Description:
Avians are proud to call Kesfaw the Phoenix their patron saint, since they firmly believe the undying creature thoughtfully gave them life. Worshippers of Kesfaw primarily pray for rejuvenation and and tenacity. They few the phoenix as a god of unlimited chances to keep trying to get whatever they're attempting right. More fanatical believers will pray for blessings of immortality.

HUMPERKNICKLE

Location:
Otenshire

Description:
Humperknickle, one of the minor fertility gods of Vyldermire, smiles upon the farms of Otenshire. In the chapel, people will pray for abundant crops and leave seed offerings. One of the more fun practices is 'plowing the fields' with your lover for a potential two-fold blessing of healthier crops and a population boom! It's rumored that it ups your chance of twins! And if it's not about kids for you, you just have an extra nice time.

VYTR'VALOST

Location:
Tilbur Village

Description:
The minor god Vytr'valost, taking the form of a long, wingless, earth-elemental dragon, embodies the qualities of endurance, perseverance, and patience. He was mostly worshipped in the northern part of Mirinah. Before and during the Great Holy War, he was a bastion for oppressed and enslaved Anthros and, on a smaller scale, suffering humans. With the conclusion of the war and the treaty in place, the majority of Anthros and humans alike started experiencing less suffering and, in time, Vytr'valost's chapels saw less and less worship until he was all but forgotten. His very last chapel in Tilbur Village is largely overgrown and in disrepair. Some may have heard of Vytr'valost from history, there aren't really any active believers.

Name: Voidblight
Category: Disease
Location(s): N/A
Description: Although the forms of contracting Voidblight have remained a mystery throughout time, the more religious groups of Mirinah often attribute its manifestation as punishment for an individual’s—primarily an eldritch individual’s—failure to maintain balance with the void. The affliction is known to continuously eat away at or siphon out one’s magic from their body, leading to symptoms like lethargy, numbness and, in more extreme examples, debilitation to the point of death. While the signs of Voidblight are normally invisible to the eye and, at times, easy to miss, some minor to advanced cases have been characterized by a ghastly combination of darkening skin (usually around the limbs or in random patches) and/or the emission of a black substance in the form of smoke or ink-like fluid. It is said that these emissions are how magic exits the body and thus contribute to balancing one’s scales; however, the more scientific types tend to call these declarations pish posh and have likened the disease to a virus, the emissions being the form in which the blight spreads. While there exists no recorded cure to date, the most recommended form of action is to simply ride out the disease and hope for a best-case scenario... though certain magic-regenerating techniques could make for an easier time. If not, perhaps an actual sacrifice may be in order. Who knows? It might just work.

Name: Faerie Bell
Category: Plant
Location(s): The Common Realm (with the exception of snowy areas), Ilyanor
Description: Faerie Bells are small, delicate flowers that grow within the common realm and Ilyanor. Their semi-transparent petals grow inwards where they store small amounts of pollen. When disturbed by either the wind or movement, the flower lights up and gives the plant the distinctive look of a fae light accompanied by the gentle chime of a bell. The light itself is actually produced by its pollen which induces a few seconds of flight on whoever comes into contact with it. Because of this, certain vendors will grow large quantities of Faerie Bells to sell their pollen as sparkly powder that allows flight for slightly longer periods of time.
Picture Link: Faerie Bell

Name: Lying Ladies
Category: Plant
Location(s): Anywhere
Description: Lying Ladies are weeds that grow just about anywhere. Their roots burrow underground and entangle themselves with other plants’ roots, effectively taking their nutrients for themselves. However, these weeds are particular in the sense that, once they’ve fed off the other, they will take its exact form. This fake copy is created within their bulbs which slowly peel back and become the copy’s leaves, although crinkled and a bit jagged. The leaves are the main form of distinguishing the fake from the real one, should one have a discerning eye. Since they’re easy to grow, these weeds pose a bit of a problem among those who would sell the copies especially because ingesting them in any form causes symptoms like food poisoning and an explosive need to go potty.
Picture Link: Lying Ladies

Name: Obe Mushi
Category: Plant
Location(s): Anywhere
Description: These crinkled up fungi grow on the roots of trees or areas where many animals have died before. Obe Mushi are mostly harmless if left by their lonesome. However, as a defensive mechanism, these mushrooms will wiggle about and release spores that upon inhaling will infect the individual with the Mushi-Ongo-Obe disease. Harvesting them causes the mushroom to shrivel up and die. However, this shriveled, dead version can be used to create a lesser LSD-inducing drug. Consuming it does not cure Mushi-Ongo-Obe disease, if not exacerbate the healing process.
Picture Link: Obe Mushi

Name Mushie-Ongo-Obe Disease (MOOD)
Category: Disease
Location(s): N/A
Description: Spread by the pollen of an Obe Mushi, this disease causes the individual to slowly grow a mushroom on the top of their head. While the mushroom is growing, the affected will undergo serious LSD or drug-like effects for the duration of the growth. The individual will live on a persistent state of hallucinations as a symptom. Signs may include sweating, fidgeting, nervous jitters, perpetually dilated pupils, and the shakes. The hallucinations coming from the disease may vary in in form—some being passive and enjoyable while others can be a bit more… traumatizing—while coming in and out of lucidity. The way to cure it is to consume the mushroom once it is fully grown or wait once it fully matures and falls off the top off your head. That being said, many people seek to be diseased and ride out the entirety of the mushroom’s growth so it can be used for medicinal cures.

Miscellaneous Lore Empty Re: Miscellaneous Lore

Post by Kupo Sat May 07, 2022 10:57 pm

Name: Rendei
Category: Minor Gods
Location(s): Wherever the Anthros (mainly Inu) live in diaspora
Description: Worship of Rendei is widely varied, accounts ranging from her being an aspect of Fleuve'ir to a completely separate entity. She is a goddess or 'mother spirit' associated with the moon, night and wolves, hence why most of her exisiting and recorded worship is by small Inu packs, her 'cult' passed down by oral tradition. Linked with her worship are the Moondance Festival in Miriad, small offerings of meat, berries & honey and daily prayer before sleeping.
