Percy has a classic inferiority complex and thus is a little soft, which is something he strives to shake off. He’s sensitive and emotional in a way that can get embarrassing, so he tries to avoid situations that might bring those traits out in himself, or hides it behind a neutral mask as much as possible. This can make him seem shy, depressed, and occasionally stand-offish, but given how easy it is to fluster the young man, who can really fault him? Despite his squishiness, this is not to say he's one to back down. If anything, his inferiority complex has ignited a strangely strong stubbornness that sees him relentlessly search for answers to the questions on his mind as well as a recklessness to throw himself into situations beyond his abilities or to try anything that might give him an edge. Should a fight kick up around him, he’s not one to hesitate to join, even if he knows he’s in over his head. Even when failure is certain, he’ll throw himself into the fray, desperately doing his best in hopes that he’ll either miraculously succeed or that he’ll at least learn something to improve. He’s not so tough that he won’t get angry or even cry in frustration once his efforts have been squashed. Honestly, when it comes to physical conflict, he has a bit of an anger issue. On a lesser scale, he's fiercely competitive in areas he's secure in, to the point that all his insecurities take a vacation and he becomes almost insufferably cocky. He's a sore loser, too.
At the end of the day, he's a sweet nerd that mumbles when he thinks and stutters when he's uncomfortable. He's smart, stubborn, and reckless, which solves a lot of problems but also creates its fair share, too. History:
Percy is from a place called Earthland, Ishgar specifically. The Dagger family is a very wealthy, powerful, and influential force within the country of Fiore. They value strength and power above all else, ideals driven home by the current patriarch Lucarius, Percy's father, and Mephistopheles, Lucarius's father. Despite their outdated sensibilities, they run a thriving empire out of Dagger Corp, which has a hand in most businesses in the country as well as hides a secret assassin syndicate to make sure they capitalized on all forms of income as well as ensure things go their way.
The Dagger children had unrealistic shoes to fill and all struggled in their own way. Pandora, the eldest sibling, was free from some of the pressure due to being a female. She struck out on her own to get out from under family obligation when Percy was still young. He and his older brother, Artemis, were born without magic, which was quite unfortunate. Both boys felt the overwhelming pressure to acquire it at all costs. Artemis achieved this by contracting a demon and enduring the horrific consequences, earning his rightful place as the Dagger heir and inheriting the secret assassin organization. Eventually, he'd become the new patriarch at their father's retirement.
Percy, on the other hand, frantically searched for ways to get his own magic and earn his place at the Dagger table but didn't have much luck. Unbeknownst to him, his body was flooded with anti-magic particles. His body rejected magic like an allergy. He attempted to make up for his lack of strength with physical strength, knowledge, science, and technology. Percy trained tirelessly with the head of Dagger staff and the children's nanny, Wallard. He became an expert in nearly every martial art, but this was still not enough. His mind was naturally brilliant, so he easily made all sorts of inventions that could simulate magic and strength. After an incident with his grandfather upon display of one said invention, Percy's face and head were badly burned, raising his already unhealthy focus on grasping magic and making up for his inefficiencies to a full-blown obsession. There were advantages of being so obsessed, like becoming the Head of Research and Development for Dagger Corp upon turning eighteen and making a ton of money, but it still wasn't enough to earn approval from his father. No matter what breakthroughs in biomechanics and technology he made, it was never enough.
His various attempts at magic often landed him in the hospital. Shoving magic stones called lacrima into his skin ended in pain and disappointment. Once, much to his brother's ire, he attempted to contract a demon but was rejected. He joined a mage guild to observe closely, but a dragon attack dropped the building on him and almost killed him. When he was released from the hospital and forced to quit the guild, he joined his friend in making a new, nature-focused guild, and this is when his life started to take a turn for the better.
Percy had met a man named Leon. Leon was ultimately good for Percy and, despite his family being very against homosexuality and the blemish they felt such a thing would leave on their name, the two young men fell for each other. Even through the trials of a magic contract and a foreign war, they helped each other through their traumas. Fighting for the winning side with magic got him his father's pride at long last, the one thing he'd ever really wanted. Flying high, Percy enjoyed a time of peace where everything seemed like it'd be okay. He could figure out how to live a new life free of the pressures, as long as he could keep Leon a secret.
Of course, such a thing couldn't stay a secret. When Percy's lover was discovered, his father put out a hit on Leon. In the process of trying to keep the man he loved safe, Percy would lose nearly everything. He'd lose his magic, his family, and his whole world.
Thrown from the portal in Hoptus Forest, the two young men were offered a second chance at life without the secrets, pressures, and death threats. Now Percy has to navigate a world where all the rules are different and the struggles. He might not have the shadow of the Daggers hanging over him, but he's also poor for the first time and has no idea how to navigate life from a fresh start. What will happen to a young man used to a wealthy lifestyle, high-tech gadgets, and advanced science has to live without access to all of that? Likes:
