Beaux hummed a gentle tune to himself as he wiped crumbs off another table at Predigio Bakery. It was calm at the bakery for a moment. The morning rush had trickled down to just a few patrons who chatted quietly at their tables or sipped their beverages and read the news. This was becoming his favorite time of the morning - a chance to recoup, clean up, and relax before the lunch crowd. Sunlight came in the window, leaving long rays of light on the floor. Beaux stopped in one for a moment, enjoying the warmth before he returned to his busywork.

He returned behind the counter, placing the rag he was using next to the sink. “Have a good day ma’am!” he called out to a woman heading towards the door. She waved back at him with a pleasant smile. Checking up on the customers again visually, he took a moment to make himself a cup of coffee. Though the caffeine made him a little jittery, the flavor made him feel happy. He didn’t know why really, but he clung onto the feeling with a quiet desperation. It was becoming a habit to drink too much coffee, he was considering switching to decaf.

The past few months had been tough on the angel. Waking up with very few of his memories left had taken a very deep toll on him. Various sensations from smells to fabrics had stirred many strange feelings in him that he had no memories to help make sense of. Just the other day, passing by a butcher shop and seeing the large knives on the wall had nearly caused him to stop breathing altogether out of panic. It was very stressful to navigate life in an unfamiliar country when anything could trigger him to react in ways that were uncontrollable and unpredictable. It was an understatement to say that he was in rough shape.

Luckily, this job had provided a sense of normalcy for him, as small as it was. Having a schedule did wonders for his mental state. He’d met so many wonderful people here in such a short time. Something that was ingrained in his brain was that community was built around food. The thought in his mind tied to the vision of a sweet-looking old woman, but he didn’t remember who she was. Her words rang true, though. Some customers were becoming regulars that he established connections with that he treasured, as impersonal as they were.

Beaux mixed in his cream and sugar, then stood sipping his coffee and leaning against the countertop. This moment of peace was nice, though the quiet would surely be disturbed by another customer coming in at any moment.

And so, the dashing adventurer returned with a quest well done to the guild to receive his payday, not a scratch on his garments. Though he was trying to look common, his flowy white tunic was made of shimmering satin and his black slacks were obviously tailored. His buckled boots were gleaming from a fresh polish, and he'd forgotten to take off the various gold rings on his fingers or the earring in his left lobe. The only thing that made him look remotely as un-noble as he wished was his eyepatch and low-tied long hair.

If only all of his job vig-making opportunities could existing only on the Avalon Islands. He hated leaving those tropical beaches anymore, but the lifestyle he led could hardly be supported by Velvet Reign functions alone. A few of his clients as a Host had fallen on hard times and didn't have the coin to pay for his time, and it was still several weeks off from the next gala. The frequent beach parties only put a band-aid on his hemorrhaging finances.

Could he just stop spending all of his hard-earned currency on fancy clothes by his favorite designer? Sure. Could he deprive himself of the finest dining in the whole tourist town? Absolutely. Could he lay off the booze and other substances to keep the party and the women entertaining? Yeah. However, would he ever do any of those willingly?

Absolutely not. Cassian du Villanell may be determined to become his own man with money he made all by himself, but he wasn't dead! Boring lives were for the old, dusty nobles that couldn't even get any from their own wives anymore. He'd live his life until he absolutely had to take his place as the head of the Lyndon Port noble family.

Speaking of family, he'd just met his mother at a winery about a block away for a secret handout so he could make this month's rent. All that alcohol sloshing in his belly was threatening to make him day-drunk, so he thought it'd be best to soak it up with something baked. If he wasn't mistaken, there was a bakery nearby. Predigio Bakery, was it?

It was. The blue-haired man stepped inside, his lone visible eye taking quick inventory before settling on the silverette sipping his coffee nearby. There was something striking about him. "Hello~" called the tanned man, his voice dipped in honey and smooth as the batters they baked their cakes with.

His moment of relaxation didn’t last long. Beaux’s blue eyes were drawn to the door of the bakery at the cheery jingle of the bell above it. A man had stepped in, greeting him with a silky, honeyed voice that drew the angel in. “Welcome to Predigio,” he replied pleasantly, placing his coffee down carefully behind him. Beaux subconsciously straightened out his floral apron and name tag, then stepped forward.

He found himself looking the newcomer over with intrigue. Engloria was full of nobles and wealthy families, so the various jewelry this guy wore wasn’t out of place. His clothing looked to be made of fine material, albeit not worn to neat perfection, and his boots shone with the sheen of a fresh polish. However, there was a rough look about him too. An eyepatch covered his right side, leaving only one blue-gray eye for Beaux’s own gaze to meet. He looked like a grand adventurer, someone who had many stories to tell.

“What can I get for you, sir?” he asked, trying not to stare too obviously. He brushed a few strands of silver hair from his face, giving a welcoming smile with a slight tilt of his head.

"Hmmm," the man hummed as if he was giving it intense thought, though he wasn't really doing anything but observing the lone currently visible member of bakery staff. There was just...something off about his back. He walked farther into the cafe and leaned his hip against one of the tables while crossing his arms in a relaxed posture. This slightly altered position did little to clear things up. "What do you recommend," he paused to lean forward, dropping his eye to the tag on the apron, "Beaux? What's good here at Predigio?" he asked, not bothering to really look for himself. He wanted to know what this silverette would do.

"In fact, I think I trust you well enough. You seem like you have good taste," Cassian said suddenly, though he really had nothing to base this assumption on other than shallow aspects alone. This was an attractive young man seeming to be sizing his customer up just as much as the customer was him. If he made good choices, then he only proved himself right. If he made poor choices, well, that gave the heir something to tease him about, now didn't it? "Why don't you bring me your personal favorite?"

Now that his challenge was issued, he eagerly awaited the man turning his back so he could get a better look at whatever was going on back there... not that he looked eager. He was the epitome of masks and controlled expressions, but his curiosity was certainly piqued. Surely this young, lithe thing didn't have a humpback! That would be a tragedy most severe.

The man asked for his suggestions on what to order and Beaux’s eyes lit up. He loved pastries and trying to pick something to fit the tastes of a complete stranger was a fun task, albeit a little nerve-wracking. “Well, there’s lots of options,” he began, but the stranger seemed to change his mind, requesting instead that the angel serve his personal favorite.

“My favorite?” Beaux asked, his eyes widening slightly. The personal request filled him with a sudden dash of shy eagerness at the chance to share his tastes. “As you wish!” he chirped, gathering what he needed to start making coffee. His personal favorite was hazelnut mocha and a chocolate croissant, which he nervously hoped would satisfy this guy too.

Beaux peeked behind him out of the corner of his eye as he reached for the cream. All of a sudden he was aware of the intense stare the stranger was giving him. An embarrassed pink hit his cheeks as he clumsily topped the hazelnut mocha with whipped cream, spilling a few blobs on the counter in his distraction. Up until now, he’d fooled himself into thinking that nobody noticed the very obvious lumps under his shirt where his wings resided. He’d purposefully blinded himself to their stares. The fact that nobody had brought it up to his face had helped maintain the illusion for him.

Maybe he only noticed the gaze because his own attention was so honed in on the other man. Something about him drew Beaux in, which only made the scrutiny that much more heavy. Maybe he’s looking at my apron, the angel thought, trying to lure himself back under the cloak of willful ignorance. Yeah, that has to be it. Or maybe… he’s looking at my butt? His cheeks deepened in redness. No, not that. Definitely the apron.

Taking a deep breath to calm himself, Beaux whirled around with coffee and plate in hand and a cheerful smile once more. He approached the table that the stranger was leaning against, placing the two items down in front of him. “My personal favorites, as requested,” he presented with a little bow. “Hazelnut mocha with whipped cream and a chocolate-filled croissant. I hope you enjoy, Mr…?” His voice trailed off with an inquisitive tone.

No, his eye was definitely not on the apron. Maybe his butt a little-- it was a really nice butt, how could he possibly resist?-- but mostly the lumps higher up on the man's shoulder blades. Cassian could be subtle when it served him, but given how easily flustered this man was with a single eye trained on him, he considered it'd be much more entertaining to tease him. Beaux got adorably clumsy when he was nervous, didn't he?

Back to the lumps. As he seated himself properly at the table, he became reasonably certain that he knew what they were now that he had a better look. This young man was either a Gaiyan, likely a Creature of Olde or Angel, or an Anthro Avian or Draconyte. Given the lack of any other detectable "non-human" traits, he was willing to bet on the Angel option, though he couldn't say he'd ever met one with Beaux's temperament before. Interesting.

With his best customer service face on, Beaux served Cassian his favorites, a hazelnut mocha with whipped cream and a chocolate-filled croissant, well done and smelling delicious. Both were very sweet items. So he wasn't the savory type. That seemed to fit. If sugar could be a person, he was starting to think Beaux would be the perfect example.

"Cassian," the blue-head offered casually, the fingertips poking from under his finglerless gloves picking up the pastry and bringing it to his mouth. He took a bite, appraising as he chewed. It was quite delicious. The buttery flakes reminded him of breakfast, while the rich and creamy chocolate elevated it to a dessert. He hadn't been intending on something so sweet after all the wine with his mother, but it was still nice. Lifting the mocha to his lips, he took a sip of it as well. It paired nicely with the croissant, still sweet but with enough bitterness from the coffee to break up all the sugar. When he lowered his cup, he became aware that some of the whipped cream was on his upper lip. As he turned his sly eye onto his bakery attendant, his tongue licked the sugary foam away with intentional sultriness. "Lovely choices, Beaux. I'm impressed~" he smiled, but his attention had long shifted from putting something into his stomach.

Without missing a beat, and before the silvery employee could go about his other work duties, Cassian brought up the big, angelic elephant in the room. He was never shy and rarely ashamed, so he thought he'd just put it out there. "So, why are you hiding your wings under your shirt like that? You aren't fooling anyone, you know," the eyepatched man asked, placing one elbow on the table so he could leisurely cup his chin in his hand. There was no malice in his question, he was just genuinely curious about the decision and its consequences. "It makes you look a bit humpbacked, which is a crying shame for someone as attractive as yourself."

Beaux looked on apprehensively as the man, who he now knew as Cassian, delved into his choice pastry and drink. It almost felt like he was in a cooking competition being judged for his creations, though not nearly as nerve-wracking. He really hoped it would be a hit, not only so he’d feel validation for his tastes, but he also subconsciously wanted the stranger’s approval. The angel tried not to look too eager, which likely only made him more obvious.

Cassian had turned back to him, whipped cream on his upper lip from the coffee. Making eye contact with Beaux, he suggestively licked it away, causing the angel to look away quickly. “Thank you,” he replied shyly. He felt his heart beat pick up at the unmasked flirting. Most of it was embarrassment, some of it nervousness, but he also felt a little twinge of excitement. It was unknown how long it had been since he’d had an interaction like this. While it was foreign, it wasn’t necessarily unwelcome.

That little nervousness was nothing compared to what he felt after Cassian spoke again. Without hesitation or any attempt to sugar-coat his words, the handsome stranger asked about Beaux’s wings, hidden snugly under his shirt. With those casual words, his illusion of ignorance shattered. The young man felt his heart drop to his stomach and back up again. Nobody had brought it up before, at least not to his face. He’d convinced himself that no one noticed in order to avoid confronting his own fear.

Flustered, the angel opened his mouth and closed it a few times, words escaping him for a moment. His face had flushed with a vibrant warmth all the way to the tips of his ears. The poor guy was so stunned he missed the compliment about his appearance entirely. Not that it would have helped his embarrassment, though.

“I-,” Beaux stammered, wanting nothing more than to melt into the floor. “I… um... “ There were a million excuses he could throw out, though none of the ones that came to mind sounded even a little believable. ‘My wings get cold easily’, ‘It’s a new fashion statement’, ‘Wings? What wings?’. He’d look like a buffoon if he said any out loud.

“It’s… a long story?” he finally said, his voice shaky. He chose to believe that Cassian would be the type to drop the subject, despite that notion going against what he knew about the stranger already. He was becoming quite experienced at willful ignorance, a troublesome habit to break.

Ah, the goldfish. I loved it when they turned into silly little goldfish, lips moving soundlessly searching for something to hide behind but finding nothing. Cute. Cassian smized as Beaux suffered, but it simply had to be done! This was a kindness, one that others avoided on the pretense of kindness. Really, they were just avoiding an uncomfortable conversation. It was selfish. The noble-born man was mighty selfish in many ways, but not when it came to faking ignorance to save someone's feelings. Just another of the many reasons he avoided Lyndon Port and his family responsibilities.

"Oh? Do my tasty confections come with a lengthy tale as well?" he asked impishly, defying Beaux's hopefulness with a dashing curl of his lips. Cassian was a man raised with the finest of manners, most of which he chose to ignore. He wanted to know more regardless of whether the employee was uncomfortable or not. It wasn't as if the beautiful young man could escape. Well, he could, but not without risking his job. While they could both possibly be wrong about their ignorant assumptions concerning one another, he was willing to bet the rent money he'd just gotten from his mother that this man was the responsible type that wouldn't abandon his post just to avoid an awkward conversation.

"There aren't any other customers, you know~. You could have a seat and get it off your chest... or off your back, in this case," Cassian simpered over his own play on words. He lifted his delicious drink to his lips again, sipping slowly as his visible eye remained trained on the angel with ease. "Who knows, maybe I have some ideas of how you can either find the perfect outfits to accentuate them. I'd have to see them first, of course."

Beaux could tell that Cassian was enjoying his discomfort. That smile was unmistakable, though there didn’t seem to be any malice behind it. He wasn’t making fun of the hidden angel like a few people had on the streets, he was just initiating an uncomfortable conversation. And oh, how uncomfortable it was. The poor angel wanted to poof into fairy dust right now.

Damn. Cassian hadn’t taken the invitation to dismiss the conversation, or maybe ignored it on purpose. Beaux was really stuck now. Leaving work or treating a customer rudely would give him more anxiety than the topic at hand. Besides, he would hate to disappoint Wes. The man had shown him much kindness since starting this job, and letting him down was out of the question.

When Cassian pointed out that they were alone, Beaux looked around the bakery with surprise. He’d been so focused on tending to the turquoise-haired man that he hadn’t realized the rest of the customers had left. The angel’s hunchbacked shoulders drooped in resignation. There really was no believable excuse now.

Beaux nervously twiddled the edge of his apron in his hands. Cassian had implied that he should take his wings out. While he was probably right, the angel was still nervous. That, and he had a shirt on with no openings in the back. Was he supposed to just strip his shirt off at work, right in the middle of the bakery? The thought was embarrassing. “Some outfit suggestions would be nice,” he admitted. He didn’t think his sense of fashion was bad, in fact he felt rather comfortable with it. However, he’d never thought of using clothing to accentuate his wings like that. He’d been mostly trying to make them less noticeable lately.

“Right,” he added quietly, “if you’ll excuse me for a moment.” Beaux made his way back into the kitchen, trying to quickly think of a way to get his wings out without going out there shirtless. Frantically scanning the kitchen, his eyes came to rest on a pair of scissors resting next to where they kneaded dough. He hated to ruin a perfectly good shirt, but his options were pretty limited. Cassian had asked for his wings to be free, and what could he do but comply?

Moments later he re-emerged from the kitchen with two large slits cut in the back of his shirt, which was now noticeably less lumpy. The angel took a seat, clasping his hands in his lap. The pressure of his fingernails left little crescent moons in his palms. Halfway spread out behind him was a set of large wings. The feathers were soft and glowed like fresh snow. His shoulders were still hunched, shrinking under the visual scrutiny he’d likely be subjected to. Being the center of attention only made the embarrassed pink of his face and ears richer.

Beaux stayed quiet, averting his eyes to the floor and hoping that his wings would distract Cassian enough to skirt around the explanation of why he hid them. It was an uncomfortable memory that still sent jolts of fear to his heart.

Post by Cassian Mon Aug 30, 2021 12:51 pm

A special kind of thrill always went through Cassian when people did what he wanted. Perhaps it was his spoiled side. Given how the man was acting, he'd been prepared to be denied and have to go about things a different way (since he was rather invested), yet the man slinked off to the kitchen to comply. How fun! Peeps at Wings weren't even on the menu to the average new customer, so this was certainly a treat, as well as a jumping point for all sorts of ideas for this delicate and compliant angel boy. The noble adored a good sport. He picked at his pastry as he waited, hoping the silverette wouldn't take too

And then the angel, a proper one now, returned. The tanned face lifted from its idle place resting in his palm, tilting with interest as he scanned the revelation with a little gasp. His mouth then pulled into a pleased smile as Beaux rejoined him, looking so adorably nervous.

“Ah, what a vision you must be at parties,” Cassian purred, unable to keep himself from imagining those wintery feathers reflecting the rainbow hues from twinkling crystal lights. It was hard not to frame everything within the circumstances of his life, which was predominantly a lavish, thriving nightlife and extravagant galas. Oh, and beach parties. That pale skin could use some sun... How much better would the angel look in elegant clothing tailored to both that lithe body and those heavenly wings? He was tempted to send for his tailor on the spot.

"We can definitely work with this. Clothes with premade holes in the back aren't impossible to find, or a tailor can just alter them for you...as well as repair those cut outs. I know one in town I can show you. He might even give you a discount if we go together," the smooth man continued, his mouth pulling into a small frown at the stiffness in Beaux's shoulders and the downturn of his eyes. Walking his fingers over, he placed his hand in the angel's line of sight, then waved. "You should show those beauties proudly, just like those eyes you're hiding from me. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Why so tense, love?" Cassian asked, flirty, yes, but not without compassion. Messing with people was fun, but prolonged discomfort was fun for no one.

“Thank you,” Beaux replied, a shy smile coming to his face. “Er, but I don’t really go to parties.” He had no clue if he was a partier in the parts of his life that lay beyond the scope of his current memory, but at the moment, he wasn’t. Not that he couldn’t, or wouldn’t if he were invited. His social circle was quite small at the moment, mostly consisting of his coworkers.

“That sounds wonderful. You’d do all that for me? But we’ve just met,” Beaux protested mildly, but he felt a warm relief. He was glad this shirt could be repaired, and that there was a chance to get clothing made for body types like his own. Angels were apparently common enough in this land to have clothing made that was forgiving of the presence of wings. Not only that, but Cassian seemed to like his wings. There was no judgement that he had noticed, no malice or disgust. His expectations of people’s reactions to his feathery appendages had been soured by one bad experience. Realizing that he was safe, at least around this man, eased some of the tension in his shoulders.

Seeing Cassian’s fingers in his line of sight, Beaux’s soft blue eyes jumped to his acquaintance’s handsome face. He felt guilty for letting his fear and shyness get in the way of his manners. “Sorry,” he apologized meekly, relaxing his posture and rolling back his shoulders. “Not everyone has been so kind about my wings,” he explained, a pained grimace overtaking his expression for a second. He hadn’t told of this experience to anyone yet, partly out of fear, and partly because nobody but Cassian had had the boldness to ask about his hidden wings. Beaux, ever too trusting, felt he could tell it to the one-eyed stranger across from him even though they had just met. He wasn’t sure the dapper man would leave without an explanation anyway.

“When I was near Hoptus Forest a while ago, a man in a fancy carriage stopped me along the road. He invited me in for tea and to help me cover some ground on my travels. He…” Beaux gulped. “He put something in the tea that made me drowsy, then said he was going to cut my wings out.” The angel shuddered. “He was horrible. He had all sorts of knives, and when he took his jacket off, there were mouths all over his arms that were alive-” his voice choked up, envisioning the living nightmare of a man all over again.

“A-anyway, I managed to get away. I thought it would just be easier to hide my wings in case I ever see him again. Well, and other people might be the same way…” Beaux took a deep breath, blinking a few times to try to calm himself.

Invitations [Cassian] Empty Re: Invitations [Cassian]

Post by Cassian Sun Sep 05, 2021 4:12 am

The smile on the noble's face broadened as the angel visibly relaxed. Much better. There might be some hope for this guy yet, and there was definitely a ton of potential. It was disappointing to hear Beaux didn't go to parties, but he hadn't said he wouldn't. Perhaps he just hadn't had the opportunity, and Cassian only attended the best of the best so surely he could show this man how to really live it up in style.

Cassian's pleased expression faltered as Beaux's face grimaced. Perhaps he hadn't thought ahead to potentially forcing a painful memory, but then again, he had presumed he wouldn't care much. He was selfish and wanted to know something, so he usually didn't let those things go even if it made his target uncomfortable. However, seeing such a face on this beautiful man hit a little different. His flirty charm retreated altogether as Beaux revealed his horrific experience, replaced by genuine concern and disgust. Some people in Vyldermire could be so vile. His brows creased as his lips pulled into a frown. "Beaux..." he started, but trailed into uneasy uncertainty.

"I'm...so sorry," he said after a moment, sobered. It was the suave man's turn to be a bit knocked off balance and unsure what to say. He wasn't the type to be honest or genuine unless he gained something from it, and in a way that was still the case since he did hope to get some time with the man, but it was far more from the heart than usual. This wasn't exactly a typical situation or something he was used to dealing with. Serious matters weren't Cassian's thing.

Truly comforting someone wasn't particularly in his wheelhouse either, given he was a spoiled and selfish man, but he seemed to decide to make an honest effort. "There are some pretty scummy dickheads, but even that's a bit...extreme," he spoke again, troubled by just how awful it was. Normally the only ones that received that kind of treatment were Anthros, and even that was supposed to be secret blackmarket stuff that "didn't happen". To so brazenly drug and threaten a Gaiyan, which he assumed Beaux was, was so risky in these modern times. How terrified had he been to desperately try to hide his wings? "I hate that you went through that, Beaux. Thankfully, most people are less, er, awful, or at least awful in other ways. In the larger Common Realm cities, anyway. You shouldn't have to worry in Engloria," he tried to reassure, but words only meant so much. Someone like Cassian would know how shallow words were. "You might want to look into sealing your wings. I'm no angel to help with that, but I do know some angels can hide and reveal them as needed, if you're interested."

The air between them had turned somber, silence filling the empty bakery. Luckily no other customers had come in while they were talking. Beaux wasn’t in the right state to give his usually excellent customer service and chipper attitude. Recalling the horror that had happened to him had put a damper on his sunshiney self, bringing about a quiet melancholy that he tried not to show too much.

Cassian expressed his sympathy, to which Beaux gave an earnest smile. “Thank you,” he replied quietly. Even though the memories still terrified him, he felt a little more at ease having put the words out there in the world.

Relief filled him from head to toe as Cassian explained that most people weren’t that awful. Engloria was safe, he wasn’t at risk of attack or ostracization here like he was worried about. Being picked up by the nightmarish man had probably been a freak chance, a one-in-a-million occurrence - at least, that’s what Beaux convinced himself of with this new information from Cassian. He gained an appreciation for the eyepatch-wearing stranger and his reassuring words. Even if they never met again, the angel would remember this moment in the cafe.

“Sealing my wings? That sounds helpful,” Beaux replied inquisitively, tilting his head slightly. He’d never heard of that before. Well, if he had heard of it, it might be lost in the memories of his past along with many other things. It was probably something very common for the angels here, but Beaux had avoided them on purpose for fear of embarrassment at his utter lack of knowledge about their culture and customs.

Invitations [Cassian] Empty Re: Invitations [Cassian]

Post by Cassian Tue Sep 07, 2021 6:44 am

Cassian's eye had drifted to the feathery appendages, wondering how something he considered so aesthetically pleasing could possibly strike someone with enough venom to want to cut them off. The noble was depraved in many ways, but it hadn't once crossed his mind that there might be those out there so twisted that they collect body parts of living people. Was it because they were so pretty? Was it a Gaiyan kink? "I'll find someone and put them in touch..." he said airily, his tone a bit distant. It was a bit unusual to be so helpful for potentially no personal gain, but... well, only someone heartless could hear that tale and not offer some sort of help. Cassian was a lush and a playboy, but wasn't a monster last time he checked.

Coming back into focus, his monogaze returned to the understandably downhearted and stressed Predigio employee. There had to be something he could do...and that thing just happened to be mutually beneficial. See? Cassian always found a way to get what he wanted, even if it meant being genuine for a change. "You really look like you need to let off some steam. All this stress will give that handsome face some nasty wrinkles," he said after a moment, a bit of his cheeky banter returning. "It would really be inexcusable if I let you be ruined that way, you know? I think a party would do you all the good in the world," the bluette continued, pulling his long ponytail over his shoulder to twirl around one of his fingers. He smiled easily, one corner upturned a bit more than the other which always made him look either mischievous or suggestive. "If you'd accompany me, I know of a fantastic party coming up that is just what the doctor ordered."

Invitations [Cassian] Me9gqVH

“I could use a break,” Beaux admitted. Since he got this job, all he’d been doing was the eat-sleep-work routine. Without many memories of who he was or where he came from, he had no clue what he liked. He’d discovered a few things that scared the hell out of him, which made him anxious to try new things and discover his interests for fear of having more awful reactions. That fear kept him on a strict routine.

But, Cassian was right, which he had seemed to be a lot in the short time they had been talking. Beaux was starting to think his acquaintance was smarter than he was letting on. Realizing that Cassian had resumed his flirtatious nature and called him handsome, the angel couldn’t help but smile demurely. He wasn’t used to being flirted with, and while it made him flustered, it wasn’t a bad feeling.

“I’d love to join you!” The young man glowed with excitement. His first party! Before he could ask for the details, the bell above the door jingled. A woman had entered the bakery, taking her jacket off before heading towards the glass case full of trays of pastries to look over the options. Remembering he was on the clock, Beaux leapt up out of his chair. Instinctively, his wings pulled in close to his back. Cassian’s words from earlier passed through his mind, so he forced himself to let his wings sit in a relaxed position, partially extended.

“I’ll get your check,”Beaux said to Cassian, feeling a little sad that they couldn’t sit and talk for longer. Meeting new people was something that he found enjoyable, and he’d hardly found out anything about the mysterious one-eyed man. Shamefully, he realized the conversation had been focused on him the whole time.

Darting to the register, Beaux printed out the receipt for Cassian while addressing the new customer that had come in. “I’ll be right with you, ma’am!” Swiftly he scribbled on the receipt, then brought it back to the table and slid it over to the dapper man with a bright smile. “What can I get for you?" he asked as he returned to the counter to help the woman.

On the receipt, he had written a little note in elegant, looping handwriting. Thank you for everything! Please write the party information on the back so I may accompany you. I look forward to our next meeting! ♡, Beaux.

Invitations [Cassian] Empty Re: Invitations [Cassian]

Post by Cassian Sun Sep 12, 2021 12:04 am

Got him!

Annoyed that their chat had been interrupted by the nerve of an invading customer, his evil satisfaction that his invitation was accepted waned into a single narrowed eye at the woman. Yes, he knew how retail worked, but that didn't mean he had to like it. Cassian was used to getting his way. He wouldn't sass the woman, though. He had to maintain his suave demeanor and chilly detachment, as much as one could trying to quickly eat a pastry and finish off a now luke-warm coffee.

Upon receiving the receipt's message, Cassian sucked his bottom lip between his teeth. Even his writing style was cute. It just didn't seem fair that this guy was so unwittingly attractive, but showing true interest in the party was a step in the right direction. Of course, Beaux was genuinely interested. The noble had never been rejected. A part of him already felt bad knowing he'd likely subject the man to some... frustration down the road. Self-aware as he was, normally he'd think nothing about putting his own desires before the feelings of someone else. As calloused as it sounded, perhaps sitting and having such a deep personal conversation with Beaux had been a bad idea. If he'd always intended to play around without forming any attachments no matter who it was, as was his usual modus operandi, he should have stopped at the shallow aspects. He's cute. Fix the humpback to enhance attractiveness and reduce embarrassment. Party.

It occurred to him that maybe it'd be best, given the unusual nature of their meeting, for him to ghost the man... but Cassian was nothing if not a risk-taker, so he threw caution to the wind.

Meet me at Silverbay pier three days from now. You might want to pack a bag, maybe even take some time off work? Avalon Islands is a bit far from here, love. ♡ Cassian

***

Even in the days that followed, which mostly consisted of making his own way back to his home away from home, Cassian reconsidered his offer several times. He could send Beaux a messenger bird to cancel, he could just not show at the pier, there were many avenues he could've taken to nip this questionable decision in the bud. The simple fact that he was concerned about showing the angel a nice time and apprehensive about how spending time with him might affect him was out of the norm. It was also basically a new experience to doubt himself, given he was normally so unapologetic and confident in all he did, good and bad.

Reminding himself of his confident nature, the dark-complected man arrived at the port with his head held high, an easy smile on his lips, and dressed in a white, short-sleeved button-up over his tight swim shorts. This would be fine. He'd asked countless people to parties and nothing more than clinginess and tears had ever come of it. Nothing that ever affected him. This would likely be the same, and if all went well, Beaux will have had a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime experience to always reflect back on.

He was completely confident the silverette would actually show, too.

Beaux was not one to back out of plans, at least not easily. Despite the budding anxiety he felt about taking a chance on such an unfamiliar situation with someone he had just met, the stronger force in his mind was the cutting need to be polite. The way his brain worked, he would rather suffer immensely than inconvenience or disappoint others. It was ingrained in his brain, though he wasn’t sure why.

As soon as he had received the note on the receipt from Cassian, Beaux had begun planning. Silverbay pier was quite far from Engloria, at least by the standards of the travel he’d completed thus far. It would take a while to get there. That same day, he’d asked Wes for some time off the next few days, citing a spontaneous personal vacation as the reason.

The nervousness mixed with the thrill of spontaneity pulled at Beaux’s stomach the moment he set out for Avalon Islands. The feeling made it hard for him to eat, sleep, or do much other than keep going. So by the time he arrived on the beautiful island, the angel was a little frazzled. He was starting to wonder if he’d made a mistake, if he wasn’t ready for this big of an adventure yet. However, he’d promised Cassian he would be there, and be there he would - no matter what.

Beaux walked leisurely towards the pier in Silverbay, admiring the ocean. There were so many boats and surfers out on the water, and so many people! He couldn’t blame the crowds, though. The sunshine was addicting. The young angel basked in its warmth as he went, enjoying how it felt on his wings. If he weren’t surrounded by people, he might have been tempted to take off his blue floral button-up. Seeing all the tanned people around made him realize just how pale his own skin was.

Reaching the pier, it only took him a moment to find who he came here for. “Cassian!” he called out, picking up his pace as he approached the eyepatched man.

Hearing his name, the young noble slowly turned, then squinted a little as if staring into the sun. The angel practically glowed, he was so pale! Like a lighthouse’s beacon in the night. If not for the blue floral shirt, Cassian thought he might go blind in his one good eye, and what a tragedy that would be. Despite being fluorescent, he looked every bit of someone pretty enough to ruin... in the best of ways, of course.

"Welcome to Avalon Islands, Beaux," the navyette smized, trying not to seem as pleased as he felt. Always chill, always smooth, like top shelf whiskey.

Today should be a fun time since he couldn't think of a single scenario that would be something he couldn’t handle. Besides, this party was technically on his turf. Though not on the Velvet Reign premises, it was down the beach and being thrown by one of the wealthier inhabitants. Wealthy enough to rent out a sizable chunk of the white sands for privates use in hopes of luring the rich and affluential of Mirinah into his grasp. He’d even hired some folks from the nearby faction to host and mingle, but Cassian was on the guest list properly, as was whoever his plus one happened to be. He had no intentions of revealing his less-than-common heritage, though. As usual, he felt no one needed to know he was the heir to the du Villanell estate. That always came with a slew of problems, and all of it, even the nepotism it came with, was avoided like the plague... unless it benefitted him in a more localized and selfish way. Like this one. Where he could take a date and had access to the highest quality foods and booze in a day of priceless excess on someone else’s vig.

“Blue is certainly your color, love. Great choice. It accentuates you well,” he said idly, turning to lead the silverette curiously down the pier to where a small motorboat was waiting for them. Otherwise he seemed aloof, though pleasant enough. It was all part of the game. Cassian would place out bait to lure people in, tease and make offers, but he never chased. He wanted to be desired, tasted, but never truly attainable. “We’ll need to take a short ride, but it’ll take us directly to the party,” he informed his ‘date’, the hope down into the boat revealing his slim but toned chest, since his shirt wasn’t buttoned. Reaching up, he offered his hand to Beaux so he could safely jump down. “I hope you’re ready to have some fun, Beaux~”

“Thank you, it’s gorgeous here.” As he spoke, the angel looked around again, taking in the seaside scenery. This wasn’t a place he would forget easily, and he’d definitely want to visit again. Turning his gaze back to Cassian, he looked for a second longer than he should have. The color of the man’s hair matched that of the depths of the ocean, the sunlight revealing just how rich of a tone it was. His demeanor seemed cool as the breeze, and Beaux felt himself drawn to that kind of confidence.

The compliment caught Beaux off guard. “Well, it’s my favorite color,” was all he could manage to say, stumbling over his own words. It would take some time around his companion to get used to this flirtatious nature.

He followed Cassian to the end of the pier, where a small boat sat on the water waiting for them. “That’s no problem,” he said with a wave of his hand. He could be out here all day. The other man hopped down into the boat and his shirt parted with the motion. Trying to look anywhere but Cassian’s exposed skin, Beaux took his extended hand and hopped down into the boat. It rocked slightly so he kept his hold on Cassian’s hand to steady himself, then released his grip and shoved his hands in his pockets quickly. "I'm so ready!" the angel replied cheerfully.

The larger boat he had taken across to the Avalon Islands earlier that day was nothing like this little motorboat. They were practically skimming the surface of the water as they went. Beaux closed his eyes, feeling the wind in his feathers and the droplets kicked up by the boat’s wake. People often called tropical places paradise, and boy were they not kidding.

“So… what’s this party going to be like?” Beaux asked, looking back towards Cassian. He’d played over many scenarios in his head, but held no realistic expectations of what was to come.

Post by Cassian Sun Sep 12, 2021 6:51 am

So quick to draw his hand away. A shame, but the man restrained a grin, more than happy to watch Beaux and all his little movements and reactions. He said with his back to the left side of the boat, admiring the wind ruffling those snowflake feathers and shimmery silver hair. Though clearly still stressed and in need of release, there was something rewarding about the emergence of Beaux's cheerful chirps.

Though the two shared a favorite color, the angel wasn't really within Cassian's normal 'type', if it could be called that. The lush did appreciate attractive faces of all types, and Beaux certainly fit that, but personality-wise, he enjoyed the more confident, rowdy, but vapid ones to party with. The kind of people that would nearly trip over themselves to entertain him and all but begged for his attention and affections, but in the most surface level of ways on both his part and theirs. To be blunt, worthless people to be used as needed and tossed aside. Cassian had yet to find anyone worth his time and effort. It was too much trouble to deal with those who were shy and would distract him from his evenings of unabashed debauchery, but things would get boring if nothing ever changed. The noble hated boredom and predictability. Trying something new could spice up his rebellious days of freedom. Beaux screamed different, and it drew him in whether he liked it or not.

"Wild~," Cassian answered Beaux's question deviously, looking like some sort of sultry demon of vices for a moment before it melted back into his charming half-smile. "This beach party is being thrown by my buddy Hamish," he continued, though he used the term 'buddy' loosely, the guy was a parasite, "and he really knows how to orchestrate things. Not only is a premium spot rented for this private event, but he also rented the resort at the edge for those who party a little too hard. There will be loud music that's perfect to dance to, games, chef-catered foods that most people only dream of, and endless booze. What happens there stays there, if you know what I mean~." The impishness returned, his pale blue eye gleaming in anticipation. "Best yet, it's all for free and the partying doesn't stop until dawn. You'll see the worst sides of the upper crust of Mirinah, and it's simply fascinating!"

His mind wandered briefly through the past parties Hamish had thrown, what he could remember of them, before it came back in and he returned his eye to his party guest. The mist from sliced waves tickled his skin and dampened his hair as he sat there, considering and hopeful. "Tell me, do you dance?"

As the question left his lips, the aforementioned beach popped over the horizon and grew larger at a rapid pace. The thumping of bass could be heard bouncing off the waves, and the sands were dotted with lots of people dancing and laughing or passing around a beach ball. A makeshift dock was set up away from the swimmers, which is where their boat docked to let them off.

Cassian hopped out, again extending his hand out to Beaux.

Beaux’s soft blue eyes widened at the word Cassian chose to describe the event. Wild? The tone of his voice wasn’t reassuring. Instantly the nerves returned to the young man’s gut and he took a deep breath. Wild was something he might not be ready for. As Cassian continued explaining what was in store for them, he continued to worry. This sounded like an expensive event, was he underdressed? Would he fit in with ‘the upper crust of Mirinah’, as they’d been described? He’d honestly been picturing a small barbecue on the beach or something, not an all-out summer bash of the upper class.

Cassian’s question broke his spiral of uncertain thoughts. At the thought of dancing, a new old memory breached his mind. He remembered standing across from a young girl, both very young teens. Around them were other children paired up in male and female duos. Everyone was dressed exquisitely. At the call of an adult’s voice, they began taking steps and circling in an elaborate pattern, like courting birds. Each movement he completed with ease, guiding the girl in his arms around the room.

Beaux took a moment to process the new memory, his brow furrowed. The slowing of the boat made him realize that they had arrived - and that he hadn’t answered Cassian’s inquiry. Je suis dés- er, I’m sorry,” the angel piped up hastily. “I’m… not sure.” The dancing in his memory was very likely not the kind of dancing the one-eyed man had been talking about. If he’d done any other kind of dancing, he didn’t know about it. Maybe this would be a good chance to find out!

Their boat pulled up to the little dock, and once more he was offered a hand to help him from the vessel. Taking it, he stepped up onto the wood, taking a moment to look around at the event before them. Music bounced from an unknown source, to which many people moved their bodies in sync. Figures dotted the beach, some playing with beach balls, others sunbathing and chatting. The large building further up the beach must be the resort Cassian was talking about. It was massive! People streamed in and out of it, many with cups or plates of food in their hands.

“Wow,” Beaux gasped, a little overwhelmed. “What are we going to do first?” he asked, looking to Cassian. Apprehension gnawed away inside him.

Invitations [Cassian] Empty Re: Invitations [Cassian]

Post by Cassian Sun Sep 12, 2021 9:49 pm

"First, we're going to ease some of your tension. It'll be hard for you to find out if you can dance if you seem like you're looking for the nearest place to hide," Cassian answered with contagious confidence. "The whole point of this is for you to have some fun and destress," he winked, starting a leisurely amble off the small pier and into the sand. Of course, Beaux had a choice about drinking and could certainly decline, but the ponytailed man would be imbibing and assumed a little liquid courage would help draw his angelic guest out of his shell.

Weaving through the crowd was easy enough, though some did cast them a glance or two. This was honestly for a myriad of reasons. From some, it was a spark of resentment toward the noble known for his wordly rowdiness, but also his detachment and aversion to his noble title, which they'd at least hoped to use for their troubles. More looked wistful, leeched on to a less attractive but more accepting wealthy person, jealous that he'd shown up to the party with someone new and different at his side. Some turned those eyes on Beaux, sizing him up, picking at him in petty whispers, while others unlinked to Cassian simply eyeballed because it was a beautiful angel with downy wings. It was a little unusual for a Gaiyan to be at such an event, let alone an angel. However, as the runaway heir navigated himself and his guest through the crowd toward one of the many full-blown bar counters set up in the sand, he held his head high, looking down on but also ignoring all of those who didn't reject their own status in a way only Cassian could pull off. With a careless smirk, he dared anyone to say anything to Beaux, and he enjoyed that this level of power was something he commanded due to his own efforts, not because of his last name. There was a reason that he, despite refusing to be treated as a noble, was still invited to these things.

As they settled into a standing table near one of the emptier bars, the one-eyed man turned his gaze onto his date with interest. The strange word Beaux had spoken earlier hadn't gone unnoticed, and Cassian wasn't the type to let something like that slide. He was a curious person who liked knowing things. He might seem lazy and uninterested in anything but partying but he was always listening, storing information away in case he could use it later. A waiter appeared to take their drink orders, which saw the man order a large, intensely blue drink befitting a beach party, a mix of tropical fruits and enough different liquors mixed in it to put him well on his way to getting drunk. It was called a Tidal Wave for a reason. After getting Beaux's potential order and leaving them alone once more, the navy head pounced. "So, what is jzhuh swee?" he asked, unable to hide his curious enthusiasm.

Beaux didn’t realize his worry was so apparent. He rolled his shoulders sheepishly, a little frustrated that he was so easy to read. “Right, a drink sounds nice,” he agreed, following Cassian down the dock and towards the party. He was letting his anxiety control him - it was hard not to - but he needed to convince himself to chill out. It would be rude of him to ruin this for Cassian by being a worry wart.

The glances and whispers of the crowd didn’t go unnoticed by the angel. Though most of them were directed at Cassian, or the pair of them, some were directed at just him. The angel kept his gaze forward, trying to ignore them by staring intensely at Cassian’s shirt. Okay, maybe there were a few glances at his butt, but mostly his back. He was starting to wonder just who the navy-haired man was. If all these people knew him and talked about him as he passed by with his chin up, he had to be someone significant. The conversation back at the bakery had been so focused on the angel that nothing about Cassian had ever been discussed. Beaux’s curiosity was growing, but he kept it to himself for now.

They reached the bar and anchored at a standing table. A waitress came by to take their orders. As Cassian ordered something called a Tidal Wave, Beaux’s mind raced. He tried to remember a drink, any drink, that he knew and liked, but was coming up blank. The waitress’ gaze turned to him, and he answered with the only option that came to mind. “Bartender’s choice,” he said, trying to sound confident in his choice.

The waitress left and Cassian didn’t hesitate to pounce. Beaux balked at the abruptness of it. Damn, he was really hoping his companion hadn’t noticed his slip up. Ever since he woke up in Hoptus Forest, the angel had unknowingly been substituting another language in with his speech. The first time he noticed it was when he greeted a couple in a wagon on the road and they had given him strange looks and asked what language he was speaking. Since then, he’d been trying to suppress it. Anything to help him stand out less in this unfamiliar land. The more he blended in, the safer he was.

“It’s an old saying my mother used, it means ‘I’m sorry’,” Beaux lied, hoping his fib landed smoothly. He hated to skirt the truth, but it was safer if he didn’t ostracize himself as an outsider. The angel was afraid Cassian would look at him differently if he knew how strange his life story was, and for some reason, the thought of that hurt him.

The lie landed as smoothly as Cassian moved and talked. The man leaning against the table across from the silverette was by no means gullible and was normally quite sharp, but he had no reason to suspect this was anything but true. He had only his own preconceptions to go from, and as far as he knew, Beaux was a Gaiyan angel with quite a different culture. Gaiyans said all sorts of wacky things from the human’s perspective, so Cassian absorbed this and filed it away. “I see. I like the way it sounds,” he purred, tilting his head with interest. “It reminds me of the colloquialisms I heard while traveling once. Every word that left their lips had such a romantic accent, I could hardly hold myself back, which was fine because they didn’t even try,” he peppered in a story with a devious chuckle. The man loved to tell tales, though whether they were true or not was always the true mystery.

The drinks were brought around, though they were a struggle to carry on a normal tray. Cassian’s drink came in a deep cup, rim sugared and decorated with cut fruit, tiny umbrellas, and a large scoop of vanilla ice cream seafoaming the top of the brilliant blue cocktail wave beneath, chilled with a few ice bubbles. However, the flamboyant Tidal Wave was hardly the trouble. It appeared that ‘Bartender’s Choice’ was something the rebellious noble recognized as a Pot-Bellied Chomper Bowl. It came in a pedestaled fishbowl nearly twice the size of Beaux’s head. It was filled with a stronger cocktail than what Cassian had ordered, mixed into a darker blue and green layered effect with lots of chopped fruits and crushed mint leaves. On top, a large fruit resembling the texture of watermelon but blue in color had been carved into a Pot-Bellied Chomper head, mouth open where a thick straw poked out.

Cassian couldn’t help but give a surprised laugh. This drink had a different name among its previous victims. The Deflater. Despite its size, everything was delicious and fine for two-thirds through the drink, but the mixture at the bottom... well, most people didn’t remember what happened after that. “Beaux, do you hold your liquor well?” he asked with an amused grin, waiting to sip his own until he was certain his guest had a drink he would actually drink.

“It does sound lovely,” Beaux replied with a nod, relieved at how Cassian had reacted. He seemed to like unfamiliar languages, especially romantic sounding ones. Perhaps someday he could reveal his fluency in the unknown tongue to him, but not for a while.

The waitress brought the drinks over, and Beaux’s eyes went as wide as saucers. Cassian’s vibrant blue drink was large on its own, filling a deep cup with all sorts of garnishes along the brim. But what sat on the tray next to it caused the color to drain from his face. Apparently the bartender’s choice was to drown him in alcohol. In a fishbowl-style cup, if it could even be called a cup, was a massive cocktail. The liquid was a beautiful mix of blue and green layers with added bits of fruit and mint. On top was a fruit that had been carved into the shape of a shark-like creature that seemed to stare into Beaux’s soul with beady fruit eyes. From its mouth poked a mocking straw, daring him to take a sip.

Beaux laughed alongside Cassian at the sight of the drink, though his amusement was more of a dry and dreadful one. All of this drink was his to down. He’d promised himself that he’d try to push his nervousness away, so he accepted the drink despite the impending misery he felt in his gut. Doomed by his own convictions with a false face of confidence, Beaux grinned at Cassian.

“Let’s find out,” he replied with a rare streak of mischief. Pulling the drink forward, he stared down the shark-thing’s intimidating glare before taking a long sip from the straw. It was absolutely, dangerously delicious - fruity, sugary, and a bit tart. “That’s really good,” the angel decided, taking another long sip. His mistake was taking this drink on an empty stomach. He didn’t have enough experience with alcohol in his current life to know that it would hit him ten times faster that way.

“What’s in yours?”
