Emi is a ball of energy that thrives on doing or saying the most bold or insane things just to get reactions out of people. Most people that know her well would swear that this was obviously due to eating too much circus food ever since she joined the circus as a child. These rumors are true.
What about the rumor that she would use her laughing spell to incapacitate a person by forcing them to laugh uncontrollably at her horrible jokes while she would steal something sweet enough to eat and then run away? Also true.
Of her spells, Emi is famous for her laughing spell. Does she overuse it and abuse it like the obnoxious girl that she is? Yes, yes she does. She is renowned for using it for stealing, for the guards that try to arrest her, for anyone that tries to fight her, and for her own amusement. Despite being a thief, prized items aren't what she's after. She only steals food, clothing, blankets, and whatever else she happens to need in order to survive. Would she steal a prized item from a rich person after incapacitating them with her laughing spell and then send them on the thrill of the chase after her only for her to return back to them again once she's tired? Yes, yes she would.
Despite these troll-like ways, Emi isn't mean-spirited. She doesn't thrive on the torture of others that aren't mean spirited. She's actually good-hearted in the sense of defending others from any mean-spirited person in the streets. Even if she doesn't know the person, she'll be quick to defend anyone in need as if she's known you her whole life. She'll instantly incapacitate a mean-spirited person with her laughing spell before taking them down with her hand to hand fighting techniques, which includes punching them and making them look bad in the wackiest fashion.
Surprisingly, she knows how to pull off “serious” very well, when she feels like it. This tends to be when she’s competitive with others, when she’s bothered by someone not being fair, or when she’s boldly flirtatious with someone she admires. She's pretty confident in her curvy, muscular looks and she tends to be a bold flirt with people that often reject her, particularly the serious or stiff people. She'll blush only when someone she admires laughs or does something romantic in return, but she's definitely far from the type to blush from shyness. There is nothing shy about this obnoxiously bold girl. She's more than likely the first to ask you out or even ask to marry you before you'd have a chance, to which she laughs off their rejections and continues to try to pursue her bold declarations of love while laughing at her own awful jokes that she uses to impress them.
Perhaps one of her flaws, aside from her obnoxious immaturity, is that Emi struggles with being too prideful to ask for help. She believes in the whole "fake it until you make it" philosophy, where if you pretend that you're successful, then you will be. Essentially, she wants to compete with all the other successful non-rogue people, like Pom Pom. If he can do it, then so can she! It's only when she's at a pretty bad state when she'll finally agree for help.
Essentially, as long as she finds someone to interact with in the streets and she doesn't find herself alone, she'll always have a laugh with anyone she meets. History:
(100 words on your character's history, where did they come from, where did they grow up? How has their life moulded them)
Emi's earliest memory was that she joined the circus at the age of 4 years old. In reality, Emi is an otherworlder that came through the portal via the Hoptus Forest at a young age. Emilia Torrelli was born in an influential family that was part of the Amata Famiglia, the largest Mafia crime organization of the industrial city of largest crime organization in the industrial city of Montselice. Even though they knew that they were a part of the Mafia organization, she, like her mother, had never been actively involved in any of the crimes that her took place with her father, much less was told about them. At the age of 4 years old, she had seen the beginning of her first shoot out before being escorted away, never being told about it and threatened to be hit if she kept asking questions. All she knew was what he had always said: everything I do is for the family. Emilia couldn't complain about being gifted with expensive jewelry, the best food, the best clothing, the best classes, but when you lived with a father that carried that stressful burden of running the mafia business without a son to take over as consigliere, the dark days tended to mix with the good days. Much like her mother, Emilia grew up with simple rules in the house: Act like your eyes never saw anything, keep your mouth shut, and you'll never get hurt.
Thus, Emilia was quieter and passive around family, dressing modestly and accustomed to keeping appearances while trying not to let it get to her that her father would have wanted a son instead of her if only to hand down the business to someone else. Unfortunately, such restraint caused Emilia to grow restless and she swore that she was going to run away the moment she would turn 18. Until then, the daughter of a mafia boss desperately looked for reasons to smile, so she surrounded herself with laughter. Always carrying around a bag of M&Ms, Emilia would find escapism by watching comedy shows on TVs, pulling playful pranks on people behind their backs, sneaking off to watch comedic movies before her father could send one of his men to guard her, even spending time dancing to loud music that drowned out all the negativity.
Perhaps that was how she discovered her magic in a world where magic was not commonplace. Emilia's desperation to smile by making someone smile or hear someone's laugh had manifested into a weak form of magic that was similar to the way the audience laughed in the shows on TV. It was at that moment when her world suddenly became a comedy show, with an audience laughing along with her. In a way, even if she found herself stuck without being able to escape from her environment, just causing someone to momentarily forget their strife and find that reprieve from laughter was enough for her to feel better.
In her teenaged years, life grew even more tense ever since she noticed Wes' brother talking behind closed doors with her father about business that she wasn't allowed to be a part of. All she knew was that afterwards, her father regarded him like the son he always wanted in front of her at the house. It was such a joke. Finding someone that wasn't even her family taking the spotlight in her father's eyes. This only manifested a competitive spirit in the teenager as she fought to at least be better at something than someone else. During this time period, it was especially harder for girls to prove themselves as equals, so it resulted with Emilia fighting boys at her school for messing with her or any other girl, and she did it with a smile. She never got in trouble, of course, given that her father never would believe that a girl threw the first punch at a boy, so this was cathartic.
Unfortunately, Don Torrelli's daughter couldn't commit to her own promise to run away at 18. Her father started looking sick from the stress of carrying the burden of being a don without a consigliere. Even if he never admitted to needing help, Emilia remained to make sure that he was taken care of. Her thoughts of running away were shaken to their core when she eventually heard that the Savaglio family was killed except for Wes' brother, given that he showed up around the same time that she heard the news. Once again, she never learned of the details and wasn't allowed to ask, but Emilia was so broken hearted, she insisted to her father to kill whoever did that to a family that was so close to them, as childhood friends of the family. It crushed her that for the first time, they didn't do anything, and it hurt her when her father refused to go their funeral. She never saw Wes again, never knowing that he actually survived. Being kept in the dark with nobody telling her anything as to why they couldn't go to the Savaglio funeral made her feel so alone, which caused her to go to a depression.
Just before her 20th birthday, Emilia regain strength to bounce back and was committed to running away to take part in a comedy show and maybe even make a real audience laugh like Lucille Ball. Unfortunately, she didn't get very far. It happened to be the day that all the families gathered together, and the family-oriented Emilia decided to turn back if only to say goodbye.
Unfortunately, an explosion occurred during that family gathering that night, and Emilia died without ever being able to take part in a comedy show, without ever making her dreams come true to make people laugh. Life, it seems, chose her to start anew. Her spirit was reborn again through a portal on Vyldemire, starting at the age of 4, where her childhood would start anew without any memory of her past life, no memory of her first gun fight that she had witnessed around this age, and no longer burdened by restraint. All that she remembered was that her first name was "Emi," and she had an old fashioned packet of M&Ms in her pocket.
Discovered immediately by people who felt initially hostile towards the out of sync aura that she, like other otherworlders, possessed initially, Emi's powers allowed them to at least be sympathetic to the young girl enough for them to drop her off at the nearest circus. The circus family instantly adopted her with a last name they came up with on their own, and Emi grew up with the people at the circus as the only family she could remember, particularly Aubrey's grandfather. She never knew about her otherworlder background that some of her circus members kept secret in hopes of keeping her safe from the hostile, untrusting world against otherworlders. Ever since the Cirque des Reves took her in, especially after finding her magic skill of making people laugh useful, Emi roomed with the hospitable people who lived at the circus, keeping her hidden from the people until her aura would synchronize. As she grew old enough to work at the circus, Emi's out of sync aura eventually became in sync enough not to cause any hostilities by the public, and she was able to perform in the circus. Emi's magical talent for making people laugh worked like a charm, which allowed her to pay for her own housing eventually.
One of the people she became close to was Aubrey, or Pom Pom, whom she held such a deep understanding for, and was always prone to playfully bothering him whenever she found him far too quiet or focused on whatever project he was working on. It was something she always looked forward to at the end of the day.
At least until the year she turned 18, when he suddenly left.
Emi was SURE that he was going to come back. She grew up with the mentality that the circus was everything. It was, essentially, her whole life. She was sure that he was going to come back. Every month, she complained about the same thing, while stuffing her face angrily with junk food.
When the months drew to close to a year with him gone, Emi suddenly realized that Pom Pom really wasn't going to come back. He had made it to the world outside of the circus. He was.. successful. This was the part where Emi would feel proud of him, which she did feel in those few lingering moments of that realization, but that quickly set off her competitive nature and her green eyes blazed with fiery passion: Oh yeah?! Well if he could easily leave the circus and be successful, then so could she!
Unknowingly similar to her counterpart in the otherworld that she came from, the restless 18 year old girl that had never set foot outside of the circus had finally left the circus to live on her own means, her own adventures, and to be successful! Unfortunately, life outside of the circus was hard and the reality check hit her hard enough to make her realize that she didn't have anyone to give her food or even have a job to pay for shelter like her job did back in the circus. Too shamed and prideful to go back to the circus unsuccessful, Emi's eyes blazed once more with the fiery determination to PROVE that she could do it!
This sadly meant that the 18 year old ended up having to steal what she needed before running away after using her laughing spell, and possibly fighting off anyone that had a problem with her, effectively honing her skills in hand-to-hand combat.
Now at 23 years of age, after living in the streets for 5 years, Emi could only hope to one day live a comfortable means, in a comfortable home, and without a worry about when her next meal would be. Unfortunately, Emi would be far too busy living in the moment and laughing in amusement to be serious long enough to do that herself. Likes:
o Laughter & Laughing at her own bad jokes - She’s the type of person to use her power to make you laugh, just to admire your laugh. She’s prone to steal something valuable, just for the fun of getting you to chase her and laugh with her, then she’ll give it back when she’s tired
o Teasing people/ Boldly flirting with people just for funny reactions
o Serious people - More of a joy to make them laugh and/or flirting with them, especially guards!
o Competitions of any kind: drinking, quests, etc.
o Kids - They’re fun! She likes making them laugh and teaching them tricks to survive
o Marriage - She’s a hopeless romantic
o Helping others - Emi only steals to survive, but she’s good-natured and will help anyone in need
o Eating Junk Food - She grew up eating circus food between performances, what did you expect? You'll often find her chewing on something sweet or at the very least looking for something of that nature.
o Parkour - Mix of acrobatic tricks picked up from the circus along with a whole lot of running. Dislikes:
(Please list 3)
o Elitist people who look down upon her/others or think they are better than her/others
o Evil people - she steals for a survival only, not for evil; she’ll fight anyone who hurts someone else for their own pleasure
o Giving back food that guards demand from her - she’ll take a bite out of it for good measure before giving it back
o Being alone - She’d rather be trapped with someone than be alone!
o Asking for help - She's too prideful to ask for help, even if she loves helping others. She'll pretend she's completely okay, even if it's obvious that she's not Goal/Aspiration:
Emi aspires to make every day filled with fun and excitement. She also seeks to inspire others to find joy in their life while also preparing them to survive it. She'd like to eventually find a career that will allow her to help others, but she currently finds too much fun making the serious people she steals from or the serious guards she runs away laugh for her to quit her ways just yet. Key Fear/Adversary:
Emi fears being truly alone and ignored. She is willing to laugh at being rejected, but being truly alone may break her into a crazed depression where she stops eating altogether. If someone has strong mental focus and their will to ignore is strong, her powers to make others laugh may not work on them unless they’re caught off guard. When this happens, this may get her into trouble.
