Familiarity Empty Familiarity

Skulking through the forest was a tall, muscular man dressed in a dark blue tunic and black pants. On his face was his usual scowl, though his sharp gaze was reduced to one eye these days. Birch had never been the most friendly individual, not in a long time. His temperament had worsened lately, and he seemed especially agitated now. As he walked he carried an intimidating spear that looked like the warped hand of a lich or maybe Death himself. Interestingly, he had no idea how he had acquired the weapon.

The way he walked made it seem as if he had a purpose, and in a way, he did. As an Otherworlder, his first breath in Vyldermire had been in this forest with the weapon in his hand. Sometimes he felt drawn to the stone relic, especially when his mind was fogged. At first, when he'd just come through, he'd known exactly who he was and where he came from. However, the longer he wandered these lands, the more he felt he'd always been here. Had he found this weapon in the catacombs beneath the Obsidian Isles or had it just been in his hand when he came through the portal? Both seemed equally real. The familiar and unfamiliar would swap back and forth chaotically, leaving him with deep confusion about who he really was. The only place that he didn't get those conflicting feelings was Hoptus Forest. It never felt unfamiliar here.

Of course, though, this was a land of monsters. Before he could take his rest, he came upon five slimes. Odd creatures these were, covered in corrosive ooze and seeming to possess no mind, yet they functioned all the same. It was as if they only possessed the most primitive instincts, and that was to attack whatever was moving nearby. For a third time in his life, Birch had lost access to most of his strength. It infuriated him to have to start over once more, but there was nothing he could do about it. Trying to pull from his former power got him nothing. He had to sense the new cosmos above and its link to this world's leylines, which seemed wary to lend him the power he sought, though it did relent to him all the same. As he started to take quick steps backwards to keep himself out of range of the mob of slimes, he began to use one of the two offensive spells he had available. One slime floated up into the air, sailing through an opening in the trees like some sort of balloon before falling and taking damage. He did the same to two others, then battered a fourth with increased gravity. It took him bearing his Gravity spell down on it three times before it splattered into chunks. Sticking his spear into the fifth that came upon him, he held it at bay while his free hand whipped out and formed a small black hole. Sucking in the slime's energy, within a few minutes the other three were shriveled and dead, and the last was nearly out. He jabbed it a couple more times with his creepy weapon, then touched it to suck in its essence as well. The slime burned through his glove and burned his skin, but within moments it was nothing but dust and he was using the energy he siphoned to heal the small amount of damage to his hand.

Familiarity Empty Re: Familiarity

After the slimes were defeated, the blond man took a moment to catch his breath. It hadn't been too difficult, but it was enough of a hassle that he needed to pause to collect and reorient himself. It was easy to get lost in the forest. With all his moving around, all the trunks and branches looked the same. At least he'd brought his compass. After consulting it, he resumed his trek through the undergrowth.

Normally, wearing an eyepatch was enough to keep his mind relatively clear on the average day. It was as if his eyes saw Vyldermire in two different ways. Blinding it kept the perception clear, though his memories were another matter. Raising his hand to the eyepatch, he pressed his palm to it, then removed it. Now that he was in the forest, the discomfort was lifting. It was a relief, and he knew more would come once he was seated at the relic. Normally Birch would just suffer the feelings, but he wanted to be extra clear before he visited the festival in Riverforte. If his plans panned out, he didn't want the conflict in his mind to add any extra pitfalls to his ambitions.

The Sylvian Ruins stood faithfully exactly where he remembered, partially retaken by the forest but still faithful enough to dump poor souls from other worlds into this one and vice versa. Though he ascribed his beliefs to The Order of the Eternal early on, he couldn't deny the presence of some other sentient being or will, be it a god or simply the magical life force of the planet. When he'd broken the cosmic laws of his former universe so severely that it ejected him (since it couldn't kill him), this world of Vyldermire had scooped him up and spat him out right here in the grass and shadows.

Birch seated himself at the base of the mossy stones, pressing his back into the cold hardness with weary relief. He felt at peace. Comfortable. Whatever it was that was unfamiliar inside him took the same comfort in the familiarity as he did. How long had it been now? It was definitely a cold winter's day when he'd arrived, though by temperature alone. The trees of this forest, he'd come to know, didn't shed and slumber like he was used to. Instead, their leaves turn cold and blue, which had been all he could see while his mind caught up with the sudden change. Time was complicated for an immortal like him, so it was very hard for Birch to quantify just how long it'd been since then. He'd wandered the new world, learning its rules and barely squeaking by. He'd hit the lottery with seeming distrustful by default. He was an Otherworlder and an Eldritch and an Anthro and a hybrid. He was about as detestable as one could get in this world, but not something he'd let hold him back. It held no purchase in his mind.

How long he sat there didn't matter. He'd achieved what he'd set out to do, the rest was just enjoying the solitude and being himself without all the pretenses. However, soon his nose picked up another scent. Humans. Ambitious as he was, this was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Well, he could have if he wasn't in the mood, since he could be fickle in that way, but with his mind clear and his discomfort lifted, how could he not reward himself with a meal fresh from the source?

The blond stood and moved through the forest without much rush, knowing he'd come upon them before they knew he was anywhere nearby. He startled they duo like the deer they were hunting. Oh, how quickly the hunter could become the hunted in this world. Birch, in a good mood for a change, enduldged their paltry attempts to fight him off once he revealed his fangs, but in the end they were no match. He'd get a fresh meal straight from the source. Disabling the man and taking the woman first, he bit the fragile flesh of her neck, then sucked at the wounds while they both screamed. She was a pretty thing. She felt dainty in his arms, pale haired and blue eyed. They were traits he was traditionally attracted to, but also repulsed by. His ex fiance had possessed these traits. It made it all the more rewarding when he left her with his venom and then snapped her neck in one swift motion.

Her lover, understandably distraught and traumatized, wailed and mourned, but Birch only smirked. "Why do you cry? She'll rise again," he said, approaching the man. "I've given her a gift. You can have it too. Won't it be nice to live together forever?" he asked, though his words were sadistic. As the man tried to refuse, deciding that being an Eldritch was a fate worse than living life eternally with his woman, Birch approached and pulled him up by the collar. "Mm, it's too bad I wasn't asking your permission," he purred, biting the man's neck more savagely than needed. Blood bubbled up out of the deep gash and he sucked it up eagerly. The blond didn't need more than a glass a day, but instead of offering the man the mercy of an instant death, he chose to drain him dry and drop his body unceremoniously beside the pretty woman. They'd wake up together as Eldritch, succumbing to the fate of all Mireans.

Wiping his mouth clean, a very pleased Birch turned and walked back off into the forest. Getting used to his vampiric nature being more prevalent had taken some time, but now he actually enjoyed it. It was perfect for getting what he wanted done. And with his mind clear, stomache well fed, and mood pleasant, it was the perfect time to head to Riverforte and take advantage of those crowds.
